Quattro models are excellent, but only if fitted with the correct wheels and tyres for winter use. Normally the taller and thinner the tyre the better. Most quattro's however are fitted with wide alloys and fat low profile tyres as normal. Some other models including A4 come with 195/65/15 alloy or steel wheels. these would be the fitment for winter tyre use in deeper snow, if they get damaged or scuffed then you won't have to shell out for an expensive 17" or 18" inch alloy.
Some manufacturers produce tyres with metal studs for use in snow but these can be very expensive, especially if only used occasionally.

2000 A6 2.8T
Dunlop allseason tires and stock wheels
8" snow storm the other day, pushed a few cars out.
Made it up snowy and icy hills no problem.
I like it better than my 4 wheel drive blazer.
snow tires always improve the traction, but I
didnt even feel the need.

I don't know what you guys do with your Audis on ice and snow! I have an '01 A6 2.7T Quattro (albeit with the ESP) and we had a pretty nasty snow storm just a couple of days ago and I was driving... not like everybody else crawling, driving my **s off!!! My best friend has a 1998 A4 2.8 with lowered suspension and wide tires and that car also handles just as good on snow and ice as it does on dry pavement. You think I'm lying? Buy a quattro and you'll be on here bragging about how well yours handles in the snow!

couple of years ago I went to the Pocono mountains with a bunch of friends. in our fleet of vehicles, among others, were an A6 and a Land Rover Discovery. I'll not bore you with numerous accounts of A6's supremacy over the Disco, just let me say this: there's no better handling car than Audi.

Conversely, I should say, DO THE CARFAX ON YOUR FUTURE CAR AND MAKE SURE YOUR MECHANIC TAKES A GOOD LOOK AT IT BEFORE YOU BUY! Most ordinary mechanics aren't good enough either - you should find someone who knows Audis well, prefferably, an Audi Service employee with knowledge and a garage with some tools... Buy repair manual for your car at Barnes and Noble - this way you'll know how much it should cost to fix the car if something breaks - mechanics tend to overcharge and over-repair when they see an Audi (or Bimmer or Benz)...

good luck

Heres a good story about how good the A6 is in the snow. I have an 02 A6 2.7t, and we got our first snow about 4-5 inches the other day. I would have taken it out in the snow for a drive myself but due to slight license issues with too many tickets I had to settle for the passenger seat. I let my girl drive who has never driven in snow before or driven my car before (for obvious reasons). I made her go to a wide open parking lot with plenty of room. By the time we left the parking lot i had her doing like 50+ consistently weaving in an out of light posts with no loss of traction or control at all. Needless to say damn good car to drive and trust in the snow. Also noted I have ESP but with stock tires and rims.

By the way, I've noticed that my Audi handles better in snow with the ESP turned off.

This car handles soo well in the snow, it almost takes away from the fun in the snow . I too agree that the A6 Quattro is absolutely superb in handling in the snow... Although, the stock suspension is a little too soft for my tastes on the dry pavement.

99 A6 Quattro here in Utah. It drives better in heavy snow than my Excursion or Ml320. I was very pleasantly surprised!!! It just would not slip (unless I pulled the hand brake!).
