Fellas My brother has a 1987 5000 that wont run after a few minutes. His indie said that he thinks the CISE III computer is bad. Is this an expensive fix, and likely culprit??

Could be the Hall sensor in the distributor, mine crapped out this past spring. When the engine didn't run it I tried to pull the codes off of it and I either got 1111 no fault recorded or 4444 bad ECU(s). I got both ignition and CIS boxes from a junkyard, same problem. I traced the problem back to the hall sensor in the distributor, a common problem. Your problem might be different but I would go through the SJM Autotechnik site to see for trouble shooting tips, it helped me a lot.

Man these Audi's are such a different animal that the Mercedes that i am used to playing with, especially without a manual. Looking under the hood looks a lot like my wife VW's. What percentage of parts were shared between VW and Audi? I see several things that have both insignias [8D]

Your observation is correct there are many parts that are similar or same as in the VW. But the Audi is put together a lot better. When I used to have my 4000S getting parts was real cheap, turns out that the whole entire 4-Cyl engine was the same as in the VW fox. All the Bosch numbers matched, my '84 50 states (California) model was exactly identical to the 49 states (federal) '87 VW Fox.

Do some models require the entire distributor to be swapped?

Unfortunately the Hall Sensor by itself is no longer available as a separate unit, you have to buy the whole distributor, about $190 ~ 210, anything higher and you are getting ripped. A few years ago you were able buy a kit for about $40. I searched all over but couldn't find one for my '91 1CQ but you might be more lucky with an 87. If buying a rebuild, make sure it is done by Bosch. I was fortunate enough to pick one up at my local junkyard for $35. This unit already had the sensor replaced. Changing the sensor is a bit of a PITA, biggest problem is grinding the rivet head and driving out the pin.

Just for reference I found that Siemens HKZ101 or HKZ101S works in place of the Bosch sensor in the 89 - 91 Distributors, might also work with others. My distributor came with the Siemens sensor and that is what I still have under the hood. HME also makes a replacement for the Siemens but I was never able to find one. If you do a Google search for the Siemens HKZ101 you find a wealth of information.
