im looking into buying an 98a4 1.8t and the guy told me that the Check Engine light is on due to the 3" downpipe deleting the catalytic converter. Is there an o2 sensor after the cat which is causing the check engine light to come on? What would i have to do to get the light to go off, install a cat? Also how many cats are on the exhaust, two?

there is one cat on the exhaust. in order to get the light to go out you pull out your instrument panel and disassemble. then you put a small piece of electrical tape over it then reassemble. Or install a cat.

There are two O2 sensors, both are in the cat. One before the air becomes all nice and minty fresh and one after. The reason your CEL (Check Engine Light) is coming on is be cause the secondary O2 Sensor is not detecting minty fresh air, but the same bad air as the first O2 Sensor. I'm going to have this problem because i'm getting my test pipe on friday. However ZedEx was talking about a new one coming out by Icon Racing that will have this problem fixed. Me being the lazy jew i am will still by the ATP test pipe then get a new one when Icon Racing's comes out in a few months. Anyway, hope this helps.

quote:

ORIGINAL: ZedEx

I'm going to dyno my car before and after... We'll see. There's this new company coming out called Icon Racing that's designing one that will eliminate the Secondary Oxygen Sensor Code, the Test Pipe will be made of 304 SS, the welds will be Robotically Tig Welded, and from what I've seen it should be a pretty solid design (I know the guy who's starting the company). He said the price will be $169.95 SHIPPED, will include OEM Gaskets, and OEM Hardware.

I'll have one in a few months once he starts selling them, I'll post a detailed write up when the time comes.

btw... one way to get by is not piss and moan because of the CEL. I have no grounds to stand on because i'm going to bitch and moan like nother until i get the new one. But just a suggestion.
