Default Engine Codes

Hey everybody,
Does anyone know how to get the trouble codes out of an '05 A4 1.8TQM without going to the dealer to have it scanned? My check engine light appeared this afternoon and for no obvious reason. And is there a site or place that is able to translate the codes? Thanks.

your car is still new and still under warranty, Id take it to the dealer and let them figure out what's wrong as long as you don't have to pay anything. Otherwise get a VAG fromross-tech

Hi trailboss...Thanks for the link. Although the car is new I like to see what the problem is before taking it to the dealer. I used to have a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited that displayed the engine codes in the odometer by simply turning the key to the pre-ignition position on and off 3 times. The fourth time displayed the engine codes. I went to the dealer and it turned out to be a vacuum leak at the T-connector to throttle, evap, and main vacuum emissions control. They replaced the T-connector. A strange thing to go wrong at 16,000 miles but thank goodness for warranty. Thanks again for the link. Be safe!!

there are other ways to get the codes if you dont have a laptop
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Scanner-Reader...QQcmdZViewItem

and if you do have a laptop then this is as good as VAG.COM and could work out cheaper

Hey Avant,
Thanks a lot!! Those are great items! I unfortunately missed the bidding war for those items. I'll keep an eye out for more of these items. Thanks again.
