Default Help - LF Headlight assembly - $1200 to fix

I just got a 2000 Audi - very nice except the safety inspection caught the LF turn signal not working. No I need a complete LF headlight assembly and a LF turnsignal socket - $1200.

Is there anything I can do to work around this - apparently the contacts are burnt out? The mechanix said it was a common problem?

Any help appreeciated (FYI I am in the DC area).

try shokan.com for the part. they are an audi only salvage yard. they have pretty much every part.

I tried - no luck there. Found one from another place for $650 shipped - beats the dealer by $300, so better, but still a crazy bill.

i cant believe they dont have it. you can try a search on audi only salvage yards. there are a few in NJ, i have contacted for parts, cant remember the name.

winstonbike,
yes...this is somewhat a common problem with those housings....but the problem has to do with the turn signal socket...and not the housing.

Expensive option (not really needed):
You can certainly buy a new xenon/HID housing for about $600 from the dealer. For your car, used replacements are extremely hard to find. I think shokan.com has a 4.2 in inventory...so you could get the housing for close to $300. Not sure.

Simple option:
The other thing you can do is get a new turn signal socket. I actually have a few of these as spare parts. I have taken these housings apart a few times...and am very familiar with how they are set up. 99% of the time, it is the three-pronged turn signal socket. Getting to that turn signal socket will require you to jack up the LF end, angle the wheel to the left and remove the wheelwell housing (black plastic part). From there, you can reach your hand up and replace the socket. Very simple.

Drop me an email and we can chat offline.

Same thing happened to my 98 A6Q. Did you look at the contacts on the removable blinker light fitting? My contact, on that piece, was partially burnt. I had the local mechanic repair it for a few bucks.

teddbygame - thanks I sent an e-mail

98 silverstreak - that sounds like my problem - how did you fix it - these guys say they are burnt and I need both a headlight assembly and a turnsignal socket.

They pulled the whole headlight assembly, so now they are saying that to test just a socket (which they have) they have to put it all back together again. Then if it doesn't work, they have to take back apart, so I am looking at another 200-250 in labor if it doesn't work. I feel like I have to order the part or I take a $250 gamble. I'm screwed because they just didn't replace the socket right off.
