Default Cost to replace timing belt?

Yesterday I called the dealer to find out how much they charged to replace the timing belt on an A6, and was quoted over $1400. Is this what is typically seen? How much do independent shops typically charge?

A good indie shop will charge no more than $900 for everything.

I ended up paying $1476 for everything. This included the timing belt, water pump, camshaft seals, thermostat, timing belt tensioner, idler roller, the multi ribbed belt and a 90K service. I took it to an independent European auto shop.

Generally on Audi’s around 100k is the time when either the water pump will go or the timing belt will need to be changed the kicker though is that if the water pump starts leaking it will sometimes leak coolant all over the timing belt and you will need to get the timing belt changed anyways. When this happened to me I went to one place got quoted around $1300 I said ok I’m not going to settle for that went up the road to another AUDI specialist and got quoted for $600 for a timing belt replacement and a new water pump installed including parts and labor (this was in Wakefield, RI area). Mechanic did a good job and I haven’t had any issues since (knock on wood) just do some shopping around like you would anything else but whatever you do make sure you go to a import or Audi specialist.

I just got mine done last week by an Indie shop for 545.00. I had a coolant leak (water pump) had it replaced 500.00 . so I paid 1045.00 for timing belt/water pump replacement/labor. Pretty good deal I think. It was a respectable shop too!!!!

I just had mine done last week (2000 A6 2.7T) by an Indie Shop. Below are the parts and labor charges. Sounds like you can get it done for cheaper though.

Tension Roller: $99
Tensioner: $161
Belt: $78
Water Pump: $171
Belt Roller: $65
Thermostat: $29
Crank Positioner Sensor: $3
Coolant: $16
Serp Belt: $38

Total Parts: $660

Total Labor: $480 (6 hours at $80)

Total Job: $1,140
