The Best Airbox Mod? writeup with pics..

1st off i wanna say thanks to Beer Mod for for the genious idea ... i had been looking for another airbox mod ever since the 1st one i did wasnt really that special.. and i felt like i wasted my time doing it .. here is Beer Mod's original idea : https://www.audiforums.com/m_258778/tm.htm ..

i took his idea .. changed things up a bit... and added some screen to help lower the chance of water and debris being thrown up into the airbox.. atleast the screen will diffuse the water as it goes through instead of big streams..

i just took the car out for a test spin.. and i must say that i was impressed with the outcome.. the intake is now even more deep .. and i can now hear the turbo about 20x louder.. i couldnt believe how loud it sounded actually.. anyway heres my write up:

I did the same thing as Beer Mod here .. EXCEPT.. i left the bracket holding the bar inside .. im not sure what they are for.. but im sure that they are there for a reason.. so i just cut out around it...this whole process took me about 20 minutes.. damn little Dremel cutting wheels kept flying apart..

ok now for the fender liner ..heres what you will see when you remove the stock airbox... you will need to use the outline from the old airbox as a guideline for drilling your holes..

http://www.sirenonline.net/images/ai...irboxliner.jpg

Here I beefed up the 5/8" holes that Beer Mod used to a 3/4" hole and also drilled some smaller holes in between and/or places that were to small for the big bit.. but needed to be drilled out.. *note you will need to clean the up the edges of the holes.. so that the frayed bits of plastic dont get in the way..

i picked up this roll of screen from Home Depot for like $7 .. i now have enough screen to do everyone car on this forum and AZ .. i should have just snuck a piece off one of the rolls in the store.. but oh well.. i opted for the aluminum screen over the fiberglass.. figuring it would be more durable

http://www.sirenonline.net/images/airbox/screen1.jpghttp://www.sirenonline.net/images/airbox/screen2.jpg

next i used some double sided tape to help secure the screen in place.. it will also be held down by the airbox once you reinstall it..

http://www.sirenonline.net/images/ai...irboxtape1.jpg

i used the back of the airbox as a guide for cutting the piece of screen.. it needs to be a little larger then your opening.. that will help insure that it stays in place..

http://www.sirenonline.net/images/ai...boxscreen1.jpg

....and here is the finised result after the airbox is reinstalled :

----all in all it took about an hour and a half.. but i think that it was time well spent.. i love the outcome.. feels and sounds 20x better.. im not sure if there are any "monster power gains".. im sure there aren't.. but the throttle response is increasingly better..

[sm=icon_cheers.gif] Thanks Beer Mod for the good idea..

any input is appreciated..

can you see the tire from the holes???? if so you might get some water in there

the holes arent directly over the tire .. more toward the inside.. ya im anxious to see how it holds up in water.. Beer Mod ran through some puddles and had no problems.. no water on his filter at all.. there is a retty big gap between the bottome of the box and the filter.. so im hoping most of the water will be diffused by the screen.. ?? i guess ill have to wait and see how it performs in the water.. thats why i bought a 2nd stock airbox.. to put everything back to stock if needed..

i would be super carfull beucase getting muddy water in there would be soo bad. and there is a reason you have a fender there to keep the water out. im i would cover that up. and cut ur air box on another side

It would take waaaaayyyy more than a few good sized rain drops to hydro lock a motor trust me on this (wheelin is my favorite thing to do...see my rig) Plus you have a oil covered filter in a box 15' from the turbo. This is all after it "gets" through the screen and 5/8' holes!!!!
