Default RE: 1998 Steering Noise

Mitaka,

I have a '97 A8L with 158000 miles. It has a metallic rattle/knock associated with turns on rough roads.

Has had a rack rebuild and full front suspension rebuild recently so I'm confident the problem doesn't lie there.

The noise seems to come from inside the instrument cluster area - where the steering column goes through!

There is no play on the steering at all, so my guess is that it is a worn bush around the column. If I apply a reasonably heavy pulling force on the steering wheel it seems a little better too.

Hope this helps,
Paul . . . .

p.s. I've driven about 12000 miles, high speed, with this 'problem' and I'm not worried except that I hate the noise.
