Faulty Catalytic Converter

I just brought my 2000 S4 for diags at a dealership because of the Check engine light coming on. They said I had a faulty Catalytic Converter...the estimate is $2500.00 to replace one of the converters...it is a major job since they need to lower the engine..does anyone know if this is accurate or am I getting ripped off.

All comments appreciated..

Thanks anyway...I am the original owner on this vehicle...it seems since my warranty expired, major issues have occured including, bad water pump - which caused internal engine damage, and now this... do you happen to know how long I can drive this w/ a bad catalytic converter?

no I don't think it will cause any internal damage but the smell will be enough to get it changed

Why would they need to lower the engine to change the cat?

I'd try and find a performance shop in your area experienced with Audi's. I was pretty sure that quote was high after I read the word "dealer".
