Default changing shocks

hi all. i've just upgraded my rear shocks because one was busted and was wanting to replace the fronts as well . i have a '98 1.8t a4 and my question is that ive heard that the struts have to be cut to put the new inserts in . if this is true has anyone done it themselves and is it difficult? ive got a fair bit of mechanical knowledge but haven't had more to do with struts then replacing the whole unit. any help would be great
cheers
