Just bought a 00 4.2 for a good deal, but i am starting to have issues with the passenger window. Intermittently, (more often than not!), the window will go up, slow down, stop, and then go straight down. it doesn't seem to be blocked by anything. can this be the switch? is the window off the track? is the window motor the problem? has any anyone else had this problem? i don't think it is the switch as this will occur from the driver master window controller and the passenger door window switch. before i go nuts figuring this out, i am hoping someone may of had a similar problem with possible solution.

also, since i am unfamiliar with audis, once going, the car runs loudly - almost like a quite bearing issue. is this "growl" common with these cars due to the all wheel drive?

A window guide is broken (quite common). You can get one from HERE And install instructions are HERE

You most likely have an issue with the plastic window guide, which is known to fail. There is a DIY writeup on how to repair this problem here: AudiWorld Tech Article: replacing window guide clips
I think eveerything you need is listed here, and I think Audi actually upgraded the replacement part, so don't be suprised if it is another color (like pink or light orange?).

As far as the loudness of your car, maybe something with the exhaust? Did the prior owner do anything to the exhaust? I installed the OEM RS6 sound enhanced exhaust on my 2002 A6 4.2, and WOW does this thing GROWL!!!

guys, can't thank you enough. the window guides were the problem. relatively inexpensive to fix as well. took it to my local mechanic with the directions you forwarded. thanks again for the help!
