A6 temp Gauge intermittant

My A6 Quattro 2.8 1999 has a temperature gauge problem.
It shows cold car, when it has to show normal temp.
Then every 2 -3 hours it work for 5 minutes and dies again.
Does anyone know where the sensor (or maybe the sender?) is located.
I searched the forum and found an extensive thread for the ECU sender.
I understood it is feeding the computer only, not the dashboard gauge.
I need to replace/troubleshoot the one that feeds the gauge.
Thank you.

have the car scanned with a vag-com first off to see if there are any problems showing up.

I scanned the car with VAG-COM.
No error codes at all.

my guess would be the instrument cluster then. when the temp sensor goes bad, it throws a code.

Hmm...
When using VAG-Com there was a feture to check instrument panel gauges. The Temp. gauge arrow moved smoothly from 0 to max and back.
I assume the temp gauge must be good....

Yes, it is the Instrument Cluster. Needs replacement - the whole thing!
The gauge is OK.
