Im looking at a 98 a4, and it comes with a cassette/ cd changer. Thing is I have no need for cassettes. And I wouldnt want to rip out the factory amps and speakers since they sound nice. How hard is it to buy a stereo from later model a4 say -00 or '01 that has cd player. does it plug right in? Where is best place to get one?

doesnt later model a4's like the '00 and '01 have a indash cd player, with a cd changer in the back of the car? What im asking is it would still be nice to have an indash cd player for whenever i want to throw in any cd. not have to go to the back and chang it out.

The Symphony head unit (which was the successor to the Concert) has ALWAYS had an in-dash CD player. The Symphony I had a single disc in the dash, with an optional changer in the trunk. The Symphony II (2002+) had a six-disc in-dash changer.

I have 98 A6, and it's not indash CD insert type unit.
It's just a head unit w/o indash CD insert with changers in the trunk.

I've actually thought about doing the same thing, but never figured out if it's interchangeable with later head units.
I've seen several people replaced it with aftermarket unit, but I'm not sure if your instrument cluster will receive info from the aftermarket headunit.

Superb link. I always was under the impression that the in-car entertainment unit (Concert) was made by Grundig and not Panasonic.

Wish I could find someone in Moscow who could repair my Audi 8 Concert radio set-up, the bloody volumn switch just leaps up and deafens you; had it fixed in one postion for months now and scared to touch it. [:@]

Now that's interesting Moscow Wolf!! I have the same issue on my Audi with a concert. I will start the car and the volume will be at a certain level, any level, and as soon as i touch it t turn down or up BAMMMMMM full volume. So what i do is, before i want to change the volume, i turn it off and then on again then change the volume. Then it's fine. I can assume it's a bug in the radio as i think if it was the actual volume contacts it wouldn't make a difference if it was turned on or off. I found that out by accident when my baby daughter was in the car and i touched the volume - quick as lighting i presed the knob in to turn off then turned it back on when she was awake and it was "normal"...
