Audi A6 Transmission problem/questions - 10/23/2006 2:19:05 AM

Hey everyone,

I purchased my Audi A6 this summer, and it has been driving great. One morning it began shifting rather hard, giving me a jolt forward. It stopped, and a few days later, when trying to pull out onto the road, the vehicle simply didn't move and sounded almost as if it wasn't "catching"

It is an automatic, and from everything I can find online it sounds like transmission problems. In your opinion, is it just the fluid and filters? If so can I change these two myself (and what parts or kind of transmission fluid do I need)? Or does this sound like a bigger problem?

Thanks in advance,

Caleb

What indication are you seeing in your display? Are all of the gears highlighted? If so, your car may be going into "limp mode".

There are no indication display lights on, everything seems fine.

Also I forgot to mention it's a 1996 model.

I'd get the car looked at ASAP, man. You don't want to fix it when it breaks. Key to maintaining Audis is preventive measures!

I have a 1999 A6 Avant. Had it for over 2 years. Drove it 400 miles a week, NY to Boston. Anyway recently I have been having the same transmission issues as mentioned. I took it to 3 shops.....who all suggested rebuilding or replacing the tranny. I finally went to a friend's shop, who suggested having the dealer take a look. I left there for 3 days, and they told me that it's a "transmission control module" problem. They said that water might have gotten into it. I had the same issues such as it going to "limp mode" after driving it for more than 15 mins.......all the gear lights, light up. The car shift as if it's going uphill........and then eventually shifts normal after 50mph. The dealer didn't give me a solid answer yet, saying that they have to look further, but it will cost $160/hr, since it's an electrical issue........just to tell me what it is. I don't know about you guys, but I don't have a money tree in my backyard. So I just said forget it!  As long as I know it's not the tranny and didn't spend $1600-$2500 for nothing. Anyway anybody had a similar issue and solved with a cheaper solution? Where can I get  cheap Transmission Control Module? Or how can I fix it without spend thousands??  The dealer already raped me with $220 to just check it out. Beside this issue, the car is in mint condition.

I got it for $11000 with 98k miles a couple of years ago, if I can't fix it for a cheap price I'll take $5000 for it, the way it is. If anyone is interested, e-mail me and I will send pics and details. I am in Brooklyn NY. You know that if the tranny was fine, it'd sell for $8000 or more. So let me know...........any help is appreciated.

I have a 1998 A6 just like yours. Today, I got the same word from my Audi dealer that I need to replace the TCM as well as the alarm system module. Grand total of $2800! THis is all due to a stupid design by Audi where a tree leaf plugged up the drain hole in the pan under the front windshield causing the heavy rain to flood the passenger side foot wells.

All fixes I have had to make in the 11 months I have owned this car are minimum of $650. Already had several of those. If I can't find this module at some reasonable cost, I will have to send this car to the crusher and go back to Volvos.
