Find an independent shop and they will charge you around 600 just replace the whole axle.

ReX.

Good morning, my friend! Incidentally I had almost the very same scenario last week. My '01 A6 2.7t is 'new' to me with approx. 87K. I went to have a tie rods inspection done, and (coincidentally?) the fellow tells me that my Left Front CV boot is ripped and needs to be replaced. I always wonder, one of two things to be true: 1) either CV boot materials suck, and they 'rip/tear' easily, or 2) someone gives the CV boot a "little encouragement", if you know what I mean. But, whatever, that's my opinion.

I completely agree with Mac_17 recommendation, the Audi dealerships inflate the repair costs on this almost double! My indie guys did it for a couple hundred bucks (a little discount b/c I was getting the tie rods replaced in the same stop). Point being: find an indie!

cheers,
ZW

Yeah, never get your service completed at the stealership. Always go to a certified independent shop. I would rather give my money to a smaller business that deserves it too. Try to find a local Audi club to find a reputable place. Good luck.

Here is your local Audi Club of America chapter -

Audi Club Chicago Chapter

I'm a member here in Kansas City and if you join the club, you usually get 10% off at the local shops and at the stealer. They should have a local yahoo group or something as well and that is a good way to find a good shop.

Are you F-ing kidding me???? I was pissed off when I had to pay $200 a side, even my corrupt useless paul miller only wanted $270 a side.

It is a very common problem, they just dry rot in the folds after a few years and have to be replaced. www.autohausaz.com has them for really cheap if you want to do them yourself.

Mods? No I didn't paint my calipers. No, I didn't add any crap to the engine. No, I just drive the car.

You should be lucky you don't have an Allroad.... because of the air ride you can adjust the ride height... if you are constantly going up and down it wears out the boots that much quicker... I have become an expert on changing them. My A6 are looking rotted and I am waiting for them to go as well. I keep a supply of boot kits on hand, the second they rip I pop them off and install a new boot and grease for less than $25 and I am off to the races again.... You need to look for the tattle tail sign of grease all over you wheel and inner fenderwell.

Hmmm.... $25 or over $1000.... I know what I am going to do every time. It pays to attempt some things yourself....

First of all, that dealership is raping you anyways. First check if the cv boot torn is recent. Try your best to see if the grease is fresh. If its still fresh, you just need to replace the cv boot. 99% a car comes in with a cv boot torn at my dealer, we just do the boot. Our dealer only charges total with parts and labor estimately about $300 to $400. If you have the tools to do it, its pretty easy. Hopefully this helps and good luck.

Offroad????.... I said Allroad... it is a Audi station wagon with adjustable air ride supsension. By raising the vehicle with this suspension.... this "crunches" the boot just a little more causing it to wear out faster. I doubt any of use would need shields for daily driving as rocks and such are not usually the reason for the worn out boots.

DIY....its easy with the right tools and there are lots of write-ups. If you can read and follow directions, it should not be a challenge for you. Paying even $150 a side, whcih I paid on my A4 before I learned to do it myself. was robbery....$400 - 500 is moronic.....Give me half and I'll do it for ya..hahahaha...it's worth DIY.

Doing the boot is time consuming to do yourself, the parts are cheap.  Some of the bolts are really difficult to remove due to age and rust.  Find someone local to do the work, bring them the parts if you want it done quickly.  (I doubt they'll have them)  Autohausaz.com has them cheaper than anyone else that I've seen.
If you are going to do it yourself, make sure you have an air hammer and impact gun.

yup and get it done soon!

if you wait, your cv joint will need to be replaced. if you wait even longer, your axle will need to be replaced.

i learned the hard way.

So easy to do your self....
I bought mine from a CV guy here in town for $130 a side and poped them in real easy.
Then I noticed that one of the boots were torn 6mths later and one of the indies in town told me $25 to replace it including the boot.

I say just buy new ones and replace them your self, real easy to do

$130 side and $25 to replace...what? You paid a $130 for one boot?

The boot kit from ECS is like $30. It is time consuming and if you have the cash just replace the whole axle...way cheaper in the long run and a hell of lot easier then replacing the boot. I did!

I think he meant whole axle, which is actually easier to replace than just the boot. I was quoted $89 for a rebuild axle at my local deep discount auto parts store, so $130 for a quality part is not unreasonable. I went cheap and replaced the boot. If I had to do it over again, I would try replacing the whole axle as the marginal cost, plus a lifetime warranty, would make the axle a better and less time consuming deal.

But, don't try this without proper air tools! Getting the control arms loose is a real bitch!

I just bought a boot from a local parts store for 15 bucks and did it myself....its a pretty simple job. But i called a local european  car shop and they quoted me 80 bucks...

There are write up's, parts and tools need lists, and pictures to go along with the fix on this site

Good Luck

If your boot is not ripped badly just fill it back up with CV-Joint grease (available at any parts store) and patch the rip with a good thick coating of rubber cement and let it dry for at least 24 hours and you are good to go.  I did that on mine and the patch job is still holding just fine and i've already put 7000 more miles on it.

PS make sure that you use CV-Joint grease or you will ruin your bearings and make sure that you fill the boot up at least 3/4 clean the boot before applying the cement and everything should turn out fine.  The whole fix should cost about $10.00

Something about pricing and service shops.
For CV boot replacement (front, right, outer) dealers quoted $380($90 parts).
Independent shop did it for $300 (quoted $180), second independent shop quoted $440??! I live in Calgary, AB and booking an appointment takes at least 2 weeks. Once  I gave my power tools to a friend due to decision not to use them anymore (on my 4000Q), I might reconsider that decision (for my 2.7T)… Dealers are save place, I guess prices are insane all over the town… Two days ago I broke an adaptor attemting to open the well torqued wheel bolts (using 1m pipe extender), I was lucky… An independent German cars shop bent my propeller shaft while changing the hanging bearing… Any suggestions about a repair shop I Calgary?
