View Full Version : *Petition Audi* Pixelation of the Drivers Display Problems? You have them, come here *MUST READ*

Ive read through and search both, here and the zine. I found many posts concerning the lost pixels/lines in your LCD display in the cluster. I'm not the only one having the problem and Im assuming neither are you. I found a thread that claimed someone was going to file a class action suit, but was later cancelled because his attorney said he didnt have a valid case.

So...... I called Audi USA. I told them about my problem. The woman, I spoke with, told me that she would look for a recall on the database. I already knew that there wasnt one, but I let her look anyway. She proceeded to tell me there was NO Recall or TSB on the issue, but that she would document the case. She told me to call my nearest dealer for tech support, but I already knew the answer to that one... a 500$ + part at my cost is not only ludacrous, but poor business. If Audi is/has having/had so many problems with this LCD is should have been TSB and fixed whether you still have a warranty in effect or not.

If anyone else here has this problem or has had to pay out of pocket for a fix that was not their fault at all, please post up. I plan on taking this thread and forwarding it, mailing it, and carrying it to a dealer with me to prove a point that there should be a TSB out on this problem and that the dealer should be fixing this as a warranty claim, whether it exists or not.

I can also talk to my lawyer and see if there is anything that he thinks he can do about the situation. I think this is poor business on Audis part, poor quality is not the consumer's expense.

Please post up contact info and VIN if you would like. I would like to start a petition and send it into Audi and see if we can get this situation resolved fairly for the customer. I'll see what I can do about a petition.

My dad's 99 A6 has almost the entire left side faded out. Looks pretty poor. Definitly seems to be a common problem with the screens on Audi's.

ya so i went to my local stealership today to see how much they wanna rip us off for this and the guy said it was $650 for it. then he goes oh ya and theres a $350 core charge. so if nothing happens with this and they wont replace it for free then i guess im just gonna have to deal with it cuz theres no way im going to pay that kind of money for a new one that will probably do the same thing

I had to get a new CD player they told me i need a new cluster and climate control. Rip off. Total parts and labor 2100$. 780$ was only the cd player i got a used one off ebay for 125$. It seems to me that audi dosent make very good LCD. the old coupes with the LCD speedo always went bad. in the older 96-98.5 climate controls the lcd would f up all the time. and in the newer lcd's like yours you got dead pixels. im not sure but for the climate control there is a rebuild kit, there may be one for your lcd as well.

Hi,
I have the same display problem with my 2000 A4 Quattro 2.8 V6 30v.
The display fades and lines are missing but the next day it will chance, some pixels come back and different ones disappear.
Does anybody know how to fix this without purchasing a new LCD unit.
It must be a bad connection somewhere I would have thought.

small word of advice ( how do you clean the facia?? ) if you spray it with any liquid then its your own fault because it seeps into the display and the makers know this, you should never spray any liquid cleaner on any LCD;)

My 98 A6 1.9 TDi had this problem.

It was directly related to the temperature "inside" the car, on a cold morning the display worked 100% OK, but as soon as the interior of the car got to something like a comfortable temperature (I leave the climate control set at 22°C) it had gradualy faded away and became almost impossible to see.
During the warm summer months I never used to see it at all because the car interior was above the "critical" temperature all the time.

Maybe you guys should live somewhere that is not quite so warm, LOL

I have recently changed the car for a late 2002 model and so far the display has showed no signs of any trouble at all.

I'm in. My 2000 A6 is so bad, I can't even read the shifter position across the bottom. With luck, I have about 6 lines working at best. I also checked into replacement or repair. None of the cluster rebuilding companies repair this, My cost on the cluster through Audi is over $500, and we must keep in mind the additional $135.00 to program it and transfer the information off the old one onto the new one. But I agree, with almost every Audi having this problem, Audi should stand behind their product. I think they need to chat with the Japanese for the electronics, and have them design a readout that works. Mine only has 73,000 miles, and has been bad for years. Count me in on your petition. My contact info is NoOther@aol.com. Contact me if you need any more info.

I hate to put a wrench in the works but even if you get a new cluster the life of the display has a max of about 5 years or less, and if you have a tt cluster im sorry the company that makes those is horrible, you think faded pixels is bad try never getting your car started. Audi has been aware of this problem since it started happening back in 98 and has no plans on compensating you for it, trust me i have an s4 and they won't give me one and i work for them! Oh and by the way tt clusters and about 2x the price that of the a4, sucks huh [&o]

Yup. My LCD screen on my cluster is messed up as well. Doesn't display anything while driving, except for the gears, and only a diagnostic if I've pushed the button to run a quick diagnostic, and when that is pushed, it isn't clear like it should be due to bad pixels. I need to get it fixed and was quoted at $1000. Absolutely ridiculious is the price and the fact that Audi isn't allowing any clusters to get fixed outside the dealership.

What I can not understand is, this problem seem to be happening on and on and on from 1997/8 andwhy the hell in the world AUDI does not fix it properly.
We are in a age of OLED displays and LCD's are NOT new on the block. There is no excuse for AUDI to put such low quality displays in a 50,000 + car.
I agree with what my dealer said "AUDI is experimenting at owner's expense".

2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T

Sign me up - the ONLY lines I see are the two horizontal lines separating the display areas in the cluster - NOTHING else. It's horrible - I called Audi about it. They called my local (Charlotte, NC) dealership who told me to go scratch.

The cluster is $900, plus 1 to 1.5 hrs labor - they would even spot me the labor if I bough the part (which they're making $500 to $600 on, PLUS the money on mine when they take it as a core charge)

Ridiculous!

I took my car in yesterday to the new Bommarito Audi dealer in West county and met Jeff the service manager, really nice guy, i took it in for an oil change and to see if they can fix the pixel issue and the front drivers compartment door will not stay closed, I do have 38XXXX on the car and he said that those fixes are under warranty! I was like really!, he is ordering a whole new cluster and the whole new part for the compartment door...I thought I read this was not a warranty item and that it was going to be a fight to get them to do this under warranty (the pixel thing) but he had no questions about it and just order the new parts and will have them by next week, I was like SWEET! Anyone had this luck with getting it taken care of under warranty? Even the oil change was $71 which its $100 at Parktown ( the otherAudi dealer) so this is my first visit here and I was pleased! Very pleased! Anyone that lives in Saint Louis, MO that is looking for a great place with great customer service go to Bommarito Audi West County!;)

2001 A4 2.8 with 50k miles losing lines in center display too. But it's different lines each day. My Audi guy (not a dealer) says they all have the problem, but tends to go away during cold weather. As I'm in Colorado, I'll see what happens over the winter. I did have to replace "clock spring" electrical wiring in the steering column about 10k miles ago, as it caused horn to malfunction and air bag lights to go on.

I've been having this problem for 1-2 years now on my 2000 A4 1.8T Avant. VIN WAUKC68D0YA168475. Start out with a couple of lines of pixels; now it's much worse, to the point of being almost completely invisible at times.

I did not take the time to see if anyone else has posted this info here, but there is a string of messages about this at http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=29577. A guy inJohannesburg, South Africa, posting as FlyingBy, says he fixedthis problem in his Audiin about an hour by rebonding the ribbon cable that leads to this display. He has a completedescription of what to do, and a couple of follow-up notes at this link. There was interest from others in knowing if anyone else had tried it, but apparently noone has.

While this problem is mainly only annoying, it did lead to me being out of gas on I-75 last week (which is why I am again considering getting this fixed). My sister and I were on a trip, and she was driving. She knew my car had an audible noise when the gas supply was low, but she kept exceeding the speed limit I had set, and after the 4th or 5th piercing noise warning her that she was going over 80 mph (which is the same sound as for low fuelor windshield washerfluid, worn brakes, light out, etc. etc.) she ignored it. Of course, she could have kept her eye on the gas gauge, butthat's another story.Bottom line...the lcd display wasn't visible,so shedid not have the visual warning of the gas pump symbol.

Others posting in the thread cited above say the problem is worse in warmer weather or when the car is warmed up. I'm not sure; I'll be paying attention to that. If the problem gets so bad that I can't see what that piercing tone is trying to tell me, I'll be thinking that I should pay what it costs to get it fixed.

I just stumbled across this thread and actually read the entire list. Before I came up with any opinion I wondered what VW owners experienced. They are essentially the same vehicles, with similar dashes. Then I read at least two posts (not including the one in German!) that alluded to the ribbon cable and the electrical connections. Being in the electrical industry it was a forehead banger. Of course the problem is electrical! The loosening of the connector would result in all the voltage and/or inputs being compromised and either no light or poor readings, and explain the intermittent conditions.

The funny (or more accurately the SAD thing) is that the entire post is essentially a rant by individuals who want magic without effort. No denying the design is a bit piss poor, but a flat out class action suit supported by a bunch of supposed enthusiasts who would spend tons of $$ and many many hours on essentially useless stuff for their cars but won't even bother to TRY to repair the ribbon cable is a sad commentary on mankind.

The problem is repairable with not much more than an afternoons worth of time and effort with no money spent except that for the beverages consumed while doing the work.

There is no class action suit here unless it's for ignorance. [:o]

I have had this thing apart countless times to try applying extra pressure to the contacts of the lcd ribbon connector. I also tried shimming the contacts under the display itself. I've followed every suggestion to fix this thing that I've been able to find. It doesn't work, end of story. Sure I can shut it off, but I certainly can't use the factory navigation without the display working. I also can't make out what the warning lights are when they pop up, that's a problem. This display is a piece of trash, why should I be responsible for fixing it anyway? Thanks for playing.

2001 S4 Mine is the same, worse in warm weather. We should get a recall, this can be considered a safety defect since thats where alot of your warnings come up, worn brake pads, gas light, ect..., plus the fact that some people paid for the navigation feature but can't use it? BS if you ask me!

Oh yes, heavy fading on 99 A6 Avant, espically when warm, sometimes just blank color, it's actually dangerous, when using tiptronic one can't read gear indicator, as well as the fact that if a warning light comes on, it may not be displayed (very dangerous), I called in complaint as well a couple of weeks ago. I am suprised they have not recalled this problem yet.

Hi Everyone.

Im new to the forum, and came across it by accident, so imagine my surprise when I saw this petition. I thought I was the only person with a clusterlight problem. I have a 2003 A6 2.4, and had the multitronic box replaced as it was shuddering and slipping when pulling away. When I got the car back I noticed that the left side of the gear indicator was completely dead(only showed gears 1-3). That means that after third gear, I have no idea what gear I'm in. Third gear is very dim, so on a verysunny day, Ican only see gears 1&2. It seriously sucks. But what I have found, is that somtimes when I change gears, they all light up briefly. This lead me to believe that when the dealership replaced the gearbox, there might have been a faulty microswitch on the gearlever that sends a signal to the display on the dash. The dealershipimmediately ruled that out and told me I have a defective dash lightcluster, and was very keen to sell me a new one right there and then..at my own expense of course. Needless to say I maintained that the problem only came upon the exchange of the gearbox, which it did. Theywanted nothing of that.

Well, I still cant see what gear I'm in, and here is the best... The car has gone in again for another gearbox change..same shuddering and slipping problem as before. It has not even covered 20 000km. I have in the meantime also met two blokes whose multitronic boxed suffered the same fate(Both of them own 2004 A4 2.0T's). Im really getting fed-up with this. Coupled to this , Ihave had toput up with the attitude of a nasty service advisor. With my previous 2 Audi's, it did notgo much better...one defect after the other. And the sad thing is, we pay our asses off for the parts and so-called first class sevice. I have yet to experience that after 4 years of troublesome Audi ownership. I'm looking high and low for a good reason to stay with Audi( and beautifull lines and hot performance figures on a spec sheet aint gonna cut it)

Would like to hearif any of you out there have experienced similar problems with "multi" boxes. Maybe we can start another petition on that topic.

The sadest thing is the poor service. Not a lot of people at the dealership seemed to care, or tried to avoid rectifying the problem at Audi's expence. But there were plenty of sales people trying to sell me another vehicle. Look, I will be honest, I love my A6, but if this is the service i'm going to get, I might start looking elsewhere to invest my money.

yup, me too, on my 2000 A6 4.2, except when its really cold outside, then it seems to work fine.... Oddly enough, my '95 A6 Avant with 210k miles has no problems, nor my '98 A8 with 165k miles.... but then, every Audi I've owned or own has some kind of weird electrical gremlin happenings....

Sign me up - I have a 02 TT. When I bought it, the car had 26,000 miles on it and no problems. After about 35k, I noticed a line or two gone and hoped it was justa fluke. Now with 40k on it, lines are in and out all the time. If thedisplay was like thatwhen I test drove it, I wouldnt have bought it.
Last week, my radio went out on me completely. One minute it was working fine. I pulled into to get gas, turned off the car, filled up, and when I turned it back on, the radio was blank. It's backlit, but no station display, CD player wont come on, cant turn it off. I'm hoping its just a fuse but who knows.

Same here - I am the proud owner of the original TT Roadster - 2000 owner after a three year wait. Only got a couple of lines - but am worried. While I am here - any body had a leak in their headlamp washer units?

1/2 dead display in 2000 A6.
Any news on progress for this petition? I sure a heck don't feel comfortable ripping sensitive instruments out of my car, sending them away, and then reinstalling myself - Audi should fix this as goodwill to entice more customers to their brand. Else, it just looks shoddy.

I read a few pages back that they wont recall due to the fact it is not a safety issue. Well how will we know any safety issues if we cant see our screen and the cars warnings if we cant see the display?

I have the same problem on my 2003 A6 however on hot days the top and bottom portions of the display completely disappear. Since the bottom portion shows the gear position indicator, I can't tell what gear I'm in. For this reason I consider it a safety issue and I registered a complaint with the NHTSA at online at http://www.safecar.gov If anyone believes the fading or complete failure of this display is a safety issue, it might be a good idea to register a complaint to see of the NHTSA agrees.

The display issues aside -- I still love the car.

When I bought my '99 A4 I wanted that LCD changed as part of the deal. The dealer thought I was stupid and tried to cover the cluster with a towel to make it dark and show me how it sort of worked. I laughed and asked him if he thought I was an idiot. He then went on to "replace" the cluster. Looked great when I picked the car up, but on my way home half of it crapped out on me. I'm guessing even if they do fix it, it will just happen again. TERRIBLE design, I can't believe people are still having trouble with this, even on newer cars. Yep put me down. Someone mentioned about not being really a safety issue. Well maybe not, but how about the thousands of people that have an issue with the ABS control module and Audi did not do anything as far as recall. That IS a HUGE safety issue. =(

I do realize that this post has been up since '06. Anything new as far as this petition?

Everyone got an lcd issue. It is easier to switch to a differetn car maker than waiting someone to fix it %) Too much money, ain't worth just for good-will for them.

BTW, ABS module can be fixed! I've done mine last winter, works as new! Do a search on this forum about ABS, you'll find the info how to repair it.

I have the same problem on my wife's Audi A-6 and I don't expect problems of this nature on a car of this caliber. This isn't a Hundai or a Kia and is not priced like either of those .

I have the same problem with my 2000 A6 4.2L. I have read about this before on here, and I'm pretty sure I have an idea of what's going on. I can't confirm my suspicions though until I get under the dash.

From what I remember, there is an issue with the soldering coming loose or cracking. This isn't really a * quality * issue in the sense that it's bad workmanship... I think it has to do with the type of soldering used to assemble these circuits.

The circuit that runs the display has some pretty tiny traces on it, so with not much solder over time thermal loading can cause damage. It's just natural wear and tear in my opinion. The real clincher is this: RoHS. Ever since the RoHS directives in Europe, they can no longer use solder containing lead. Well, lead is what made it strong and flexible so that thermal loading wouldn't cause premature failure. The use a tin solder instead, which is more brittle.

So, if anyone can find the thread in which the guy took his dash apart and gave a how-to on re-soldering all those connections, please post it up! I'm dying to find it so I can try to fix my display!

Thanks!

It has nothing to do with soldering in most cases - most of the time it's because of the actual ribbon that connects the display and the board. This ribbon contains a microcontroller that computes the data on the board to a matrix-format ready for the display (which, of course, is a matrix).

There isn't an easy answer to this problem. I don't believe any one has really fixed this problem unless it was one of the more rare soldering problems. The easiest is to actually pay the dealer, the next easiest is to buy one off of ebay for 1/4 the price of the dealer, and the third easiest is to send it in to specialists to fix them, there are a few companies who specifically deal with this issue - might take me a while to find them again. Finally the last option is to buy a new screen and ribbon - there is one website that sells them and again, it might take me a while to find it. I think Audizine had something going with that website/guy.

If you don't want to spend a decent amount of money (minimum of $100), you aren't going to be able to fix it. I've had mine apart and being an Electrical Engineer, i can see that there isn't anything wrong with the leads on the ribbon, thus it has to be somewhere between the leads and the display which is the ribbon!

edit: Here is the cable and the links are below it.

I wrote a letter to Audi NA and three weeks later they called back. They got in touch with my dealer (who offered no assistance initially) and then the dealer’s service manager called me and offered to split the cost of the parts and labor for the repair. I went for it. My contribution was around $450. This seemed worth it to me.

The interesting thing is that the dealer replaced the entire instrument cluster not just the center of the display. I back on the road with my A6 and it is perfect once again!

count me in on this too. bought my 99 a6 with nothing visible at all anymore except (strangely) in the mornings, when i can barely make out some of the readings. I just turn it off most of the time, hurts my heart a little less if its just off. Also my fuel gauge decides to show whatever it wants within a quarter of a tank of whats really in there. any ideas on if this is a cluster issue or tank? fuel sensor recall was done.
