So I am going to change my oil for the first time in my 2001 4.2 A6 and was wondering if it matters who does it? I am going to go synthetic but do I have to go to an Audi dealership or can I go to say Jiffy Lube or a place like that?

AVOID Jiffy Lube! Find a local independant mechanic that specializes in VW/Audi and take your car there for the oil change. Dealers in general are a bit overpriced for oil changes (although I still take mine there to keep up the relationship).

You should do it. It is a very easy DIY. Just make sure you use a Mann or Mahle filter with synthetic oil.

I agreee with Boston Driver..A good Indy specializing in German Cars or your dealer. The Jiffy Lubes and other shops might not be aware of the special needs of the vehicle. The stealer costs too damn much and yes, your best bet is to DIY if you have the tools/time. It is really easy...

I take mine to the stealership for oil changes. It's a little over priced but you know that they are doing the job right. I had mine in last Saturday and they charged me $83.00.

Mikeko, go to ECStuning.com. There is a oil change kit there, i believe it includes 5 liters of Synthetic Pentosin 5w-40, drain plug, washers and the Mann/Mahle oil filter.

Like others told you, avoid Jiffy lube! I went there once and they didnt tight the draing plug well, it was leaking all over the place. Instead DIY, I did mine for the first time a couple weeks ago, it took me like 15 min. tops.

Good luck!

Buy a set of ramps so you dont need a floor jack, should have on anyway, and have at it. You shouls also purchase a set of mertic wrenches/sockets.

I have rhino ramps and they work perfectly. If you DIY, just remember to fill the oil filter with some oil, not full, before you screw it on.

I totally agree with the use of Rhino Ramps! I just upgraded my set to the wider 12000 lb. version, which accomodates the 255 tires a bit better than the 8000. The great thing about the ramps is the safety factor, the ease of use. One disadvantage of the Rhino Ramps is storage...they do not break down or stack, so they are quite bulky.

Check them out here:Rhino Ramps

If using ramps, does having the nose of the car raised cause all the oil not to draining out (on a 1999 2.8)??

On my 96 Avant, the oil drain faces the driver side, so what I did was put a piece of 2x4 under the passinger side ramp to raise it a bit and tilt to the side where the oil drain is.

Of course Dave. I have both and the ramps are far easier or oil changes.

I have a 2000 A6 2.7T. I was paying $75 at dealership. I started doing it myself. It was pretty easy. I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic 5w-30. Have a hard time finding 5W-40. I also use a Mobil 1 Extended service oil filter. Hard time finding Mann around here. The car calls for almost 7 quarts (6.8) of oil. I spent about $40 on the oil and $10 on the filter. Only took about 15 min. Good Luck.

Do they automatically use synthetic?

At the dealer I would guess def synth.

Castrol makes the 5w40 in full synth. Just make sure whatever brand you use it conforms with the VW 502 00 and 505 00.

I'm new to Audi's and just purchased my '99 A6 Quattro.
I just did a oil change with Mobil 1 synthetic 5w 30.
Is it better to use 5w 40, 10w 30 or 5w 30?
I ddi read the manual but a little bit confusing and doesnt say which is best or recommended.
Thanks in advance.

My change costs $80 with Mobile 1 standard oil 5w30. Having the dealer go to Synth would cost another $45 bucks which isnt bad..heres why...A case of 6 5w30 full synthetic mobil 1 costs $36 at National Auto Parts. My car takes up to 8 quarts.I would have to pay another $36 to get another 6..stuff is not cheap with todays prices. I can get the dealer to do it for $45 extra saving a whopping $27 bucks...movie for 2..LOL I know, I know, its petty but hell $$ is $$. Anyways, better deal at the dealer and peace of mind. Once you go synth your not suppossed to go back so get used to paying more

Just buy the oil yourself and do it, its much cheaper. you will find everything you need to do is right there once you take the lower pan off. (which is the biggest pain of the job) Just use a wrench to take out the oil drain plug, once that is mellowed out from poring oil out you can slowly unscrew your oil filter. Put the new filter on put the drain plug back in fill it back up with oil.
