tinting laws depend on the state. It cost me 150 bucks to tint my car. 250 seems a little high.

Only 2 places near me that tint windows. One charges $250.00 and the other $225.00. I could do it myself. Saw a kit on the Net for $79.95. The pieces are all cut out ready to install. But wanted some kind of warranty that the shops provide. My warranty kinda sucks.
Someone has to have pic or two. Let me see them. Please

I have tinted my windows, it is a fun time. I bought my tint at Walmart. Each state has different laws in different car/truck. In MN the law is you can have it dark as you if you have a Van or a SUV in the rear windows. But it you have a car or a truck it is 35% limit.

1. The best way to do it is to buy the pre-cut tint. That is half of the battle.

2. Mix a solition with water and dish soap. Lemon Joy works well.

-Spray generiously

3. Then smooth out (i like using a old credit card)

good tip.....

If you can leave the car in the same area/temp as you installed the tint. Like overnight before driving the tint will stick and look better.

Thanks for the picture, same color car I have.
Around the outside edge of the back windows are those black dots, does the film go over these? That's why
I think I will pay the $225, the extra will be like paying for a warranty and a piece of mind.
I'll post pics once I get it done.
Thanks for the input.

For the back window I used 6 inch strips that were pre-cut that way for the back window. Yes it did go over the black dots.

I found a place in Vancouver BC that will do it for $175.00 CND + taxes.
I am only a hour drive from thier shop. Just need to make sure of the film they use and the warranty.
Is there a certain film that is better than others? I have heard they use a glue where the film covers the dot matrix
With all the pics I've seen(thanks) I think it will look really good.

Had mine done for $175.00, in MA. Normally $199, but the guy knew my brother and threw me a $20 bone.

I have had my 01 Passat GLX 4mition Wagon for $229 and 01 Jetta VR6 for $219 by a local shop here in MN that does it for the local audi and vw dealer. While that cost is more than doing it myself, they guarantee the job and will replace a tint if I accidently tear it or something happens to it. I will be using the same guys (Sun Control of MN) to tint my 01 A6 2.7TQ.

Sorry for jumping in on this so late, but this one of my areas of expertise.

What brand of tint did you have installed? And what state is the car registered?

BTW: $250 is not unreasonable for the better brands of tint installed by a trained technician.

Diamond Brillant 30, Washington State.
They did a good job on the install, nice clean edges and so far it's sticking to the dot-matrix.
I waited 4 days before I moved the windows. Not very dark, didn't want that limo look.
The warranty was a good thing too, if the kid scatches it, broken window, starts to lose it adhesive, anything. Free replacement for life and can be transfered once.
I think it was a good deal. It will help with the heat too, if it ever warms up. blocks 99% of UV's

Well... unfortunately 30% is illegal in Washington state. 35% is the legl limit. I don't know how much Washington enforces the tint law though. At 35% "Film" (which is different than the "Net" % that other states use) you may very well pass - unless they use sophisticated meters like they do in several other states.

Good to hear the tint is holding to the DM - that's always a trouble area.

I'll check on Diamond Brilliant (doesn't ring a bell with me) and find out some data on the product.

Well... here's what I found out:
The warranty is well respected in the industry.
One of my sources suggested it was a Sungard product, but I couldn't find it. So, until I track down it's manufacturer, I won't be able to pass on any more info.

Sorry I couldn't be any more help.

Thanks for the info, I think.
Funny, the shop that installed it never mentioned that 30 was illegal. They said I could of done darker in the back but that would of look too strange for me. So is it my problem now? or should they've at least told me and let me make the decision to break the law? I certainly don't want my wife and kid to get pulled over and harassed by the cops just because that shop is willing to do anything to get a sale. They only had 3 shades, lighter than the 30 I got and very dark. I really don't think the lighter one was 35 it seemed lighter. I will call them tomorrow and see what they say. Plus I'll check the paperwork to make sure I didn't missed the fine print stuff. Thanks

Here is a piece from the install shops website:

Diamond is just a fancy name for a sun gurd dealer. They alow only one in every city with the ability to sell a no fault warranty. It is like Llumar and the Fomula 1 program. Just gives the dealer one more selling point.

Hello, sorry im late with this reply but here is a website with the tint laws.
http://www.tintdude.com/laws.html
Also, yes if you get stopped by one of those cops that are really...BITCH for a lack of a better word, techincally you are breaking the law, and yes it is your fault not the tinting shop. ( They go by the rule that the civillian must always be informed and find out about the laws, like u cant shoot someone and say i didnt know that was illegal lol :P ).
But I live in FL , our state law is 28% , I put 20% and I still think thats not dark enough! Sorry but the sun here is a pain, and cops put like 2.5% in their cars then bitch about ours..  And yes the way they measure it is they put this little device that tells them the amount of light passing thru the glass with the tint, but I have been driving 5 years with 20% on and I have never had any tickets. (That one time the cop pulled me over the meter said 18% and he said thats fine). Sorry for the long response but I hope I have given you the answer you were looking for,

Enrique.
