I am about to purchase another audi - can any one give me an opinion of the v6 2.8 and the v8's. I currently have a 5 cyl 2.3 and a 4 cyl 1.8 with good results. Are the new designs reliable or do they have some issues Thanks

I have not seen any 90 models with factory V8 the only options I have seen is either the 2.8 V6, 20V 5-cyl and 2.3 5-cyl.

your response gives me pause, perhaps the seller on ebay is mis informed

However, are the 2.8 V6 engines reliable or do they are cronic problems??

Quite often the sellers are clueless as they are mechanically challenged and only know the gas pedal, brake, pedal steering wheel and speedometer. Such was the case when I bought my 78 Saab, the owner didn’t know if the car had FI or a carb and thought that 5-speed meant 4 forward plus reverse. In any case the 2.8 V6 is probably reliable as I have not heard of too many major complaints. The 2.3 is rock solid but has its own share of problems. Some parts are more expensive and are not as common at my local salvage yard.

Thanks

Yes that 2.3 has some issues - starts right up and runs fine, but shut if off and try to start it again and it struggles. Also sometimes looses power. A real mystery as I have replaced all the sensors, idle control, cat and exhaust, wires plugs rotor cap, filters etc - even replaced all the vacumn lines - found a hole in the rubber intake plenum and replaced it with a junk yard part that was almost new - think it might be centered on the air intake meter - thats my next target to remove, clean and lube

The old lady's been on my ass to get it done - purchased the car for $400 - have about 600 into it - its a challenge and I am not going to let it win

I suggest cleaning all the contacts before replacing any sensors. What I typically notice on cars that are 10+ years old is corroded and oxidized contacts. In the northeast, contacts can dissolve in a couple of weeks from the salt. Grounding points is something that is frequently overlooked and gives you a bad electrical connection and ultimately a poor signal. The cleaning alone is sometimes sufficient enough to increase performance, fuel economy and even pass emissions.
