From everything I've read, stay OEM.  Any gains you'll get out of intake mods are not worth the money you will spend.  Dollars spend elsewhere (chipping, suspension, wheels, exhaust etc.) will do more.  Not first hand experience, but a statement based on a lot of reading.

altough I would say this is true, it may be worth your money and time to get a K&N filter... you can find them cheaper on eBay than OEM filters at the auto store... mine should be here next week :)

I considered going the K&N route but was talked out of it by a number of hard-core Audi enthusiasts -- including some people who regularly track their cars.  Not that the K&N would hurt, just not worth the extra money.  You'd be better off spending the money on more frequent replacement of OEM filters.

I bought oil, air, & pollen filters in bulk from www.germanfilters.com -- very good pricing.

I used to have a K&N filter in my Saab 9k turbo.  I did notice the turbo spooled up faster, but I don't know if this would apply to Audi since Saab used one large turbo and Audi uses two small turbos.  I did notice that there was a significant jump in silica (dirt) in the oil based on Blackstone Laboratories oil analysis.  Also you have to oil them and clean them, too much work for me, maybe not for others though.

i just replaced my air filter with a k&n.  it was a bitch and i burnt the crap out of my hand too.  the origional filter was a lot deeper and the fins are held together with what looks like hot melt glue.  the k&n filter does not give and the air box is kind of angled so you have to kind of cram it in there.  i did not notice any difference until i got on the interstate.  i could definately tell it was faster and i am getting 2mpg's better gas mileage.
