Default A6 2.6 ABC engine starting and idle probs

My 1996 2.6 ABC engine A6 is seriously doing my head in. Over the last few months its started to idle high when sat at traffic lights and then cuts out it will restart straight away, It went into the Audi garage and although it showed no fault codes etc they thought it may be the temp sensor for the ecu. This was afew weeks ago they never had a sensor in, anyway yesterday the car broke down it has started to nearly cut out when pulling away and coughs and splutters then will re gain its rpm. It cut out totally and refused to restart for a lonbg time when it did it stank of fuel. The wife bought it round to me and again it refused to start, again when it did it stank of fuel. Today i have replaced the fuel filter and the temp sensor. All seemed well but tonight again it started nearly cutting out and then when i left it outside the shop it refused to restart again when it finally did it stank big time , its almost its seriously over fuelling. If you stop the engine when its idling normally it seems not to bad to restart when its stopped at 1000 rpm plus idling it will play up when you try and restart it, when you do tryt it does fire but wont run and when it does finally fire up it coughs splutters for 10 secs or so and stinks of fuel
It starts ok when the engines stone cold. any ideas anyone.........................please!
