I have Audi 80' E 2.0 auto 1989, and im having problems with the engine tick over, when it is ticking over the revs increase then de-crease every few seconds, constanlty goin up and down on its own, as though ive reved it, but havnt, so if anyone knows the solution to this could you please let me know, thanks.

idle air control valve check its getting battery voltage and pipes are in good condition and clean the valve out plus the pipes

I have looked for it, but cant seem to find it, i have checked in the Haynes manual aswell and had no luck, has it any other names which might indicate where it is in the manual, or could you tell me where to find it, thanks again.....

I had this problem on my car. When i started looking close at the pipes i found they were worn in places i didn't think possible. My car was sucking air in everywhere where it shouldn't. Also the rocker cover gasket was going so it started sucking air through there. Like there was no oil cap on. There was also a clear/white pipe real thin attached to the air filter. God knows what it does but it had come out of it's hole and the only way i found it was cos of the hissing noise again sucking in air. But i found that once i'd repaired, bought, inspected and replaced two or three pipes it ticks over normal now. And i got a hell of a lot more tourqe. Which was nice.

Yeah i see, but this idle air control valve......where is it exactly ? ive looked and cant seem to see it, if i can find it then i will try cleaning or replacing them first, but its finding it.......??????

it shoud be near th valve cover (firewall end) at the end of the intake and the air filter air boot, the air boot is a big blac rubber thing one end of it sits on the fuel distributor the other end should have the ISV close to it .. and also check all the temp senders because the ISV gets signal from one of them and thusly controls the revs ... good luck
