i have read mixed reviews; i read through all of the posts and some say they have yet to have a problem while others have had some. i ran one on my 1999 saab 93 for about a month before the car died (r.i.p). is it just some people's bad luck combined with other factors that went unnoticed or is there something actually wrong with their filters? thanks

nothing wrong with them except some ppl same they come over oiled from the factory so you might want to pat them down a bit with a paper towel

btw I have a 94 9000CSE and I run a K&N filter and its been great....what happened to your saab?

my older brother was a bit to hard on it, third gear had a nasty grind and there were some pretty bad dents on the doors and what not. what finally did it was the power steering line snapped and it would have cost way to much to fix the thing then it was worth. thats how i got my a4. still miss the saab tho, really quick if you went from a roll.

K&N air filters are one of the tops names for airfilters, are you looking into a drop in replacement K&N or are you getting the cone filter?

Cone filter = cool sound.

Yeah, I have one on my A3, the K&N Prototype for my car and it is awesome.   Looks good and sounds great!   It's cool to actually hear your engine sucking in the air and the DV release.   I could definitely feel the power increase too.

Cheers!

I tried looking a little while for a K&N cone for my A4 - where did you find yours?

Hey, sorry Chef - I've never been in this section before (I'm an off topic / A4 section junky).  I didn't realize there was a crapload of info here on intakes.  Who would have thought an intake forum would talk about it?
So anyway, I'll do some reading... Cheers!

Kevin,

K&N used my A3 for prototyping so I got the preproduction model for free.   Not sure about the release for the 1.8T A4, but I'm sure they are readily available.   PM me if you crap out on finding one and I'll help.

Cheers!

I had a K&N on one of my 928s.  It consistently resulted in fine materials accumulating on the engine side of the filter.  So perhaps over-oiling was a factor, but it also was passing fines through the filter.  In addition, the filters are much less efficient after they have been washed/dried/re-oiled.   For the miniscule potential performance increase, I've deferred on them. The trick with any open element configuration is to make sure you aren't drawing in the heated air from the engine compartment.

People have had issues with the oil messing up the Mass air. The oil seems to kill them.
