Default 94 100S timing belt question

I have been reading alot about timing belt issues with AUDI's. I am wondering if I should just replace the timing belt even if there is not issue yet. I have no clue how many miles are on the belt right now.
I have been reading stories about the belt blowing and breaking the engine, and tearing through the hood. What is true about this, and what should I do.
i can get a belt, tensioner and roller/pulley for $90. What else should I replace when doing this?
Also is this something I can do my slef pretty easy? I am somewhat handy....
