shopping for a new Q7

jaydubyagee -> shopping for a new Q7 (2/25/2007 9:31:59 AM)

started shopping for a Q7 to replace my S4, had some questions regarding available options.

*I've been using the audiusa.com configurator and it seems like the S Line Options are only available if you order the Daytona Grey color. Is this a programming anomaly or is this the case? I don't see the S Line option in the dealer brochure.

*What the heck is privacy glass and will my radar detector work with it?

*Do I need the music interface option to dock an ipod, or are there cheats to make it work w/o?

*If I order a custom build, what is a typical wait for delivery (salesman says 3 months)?

You can order an S line Q7 in about any color you want i believe, but it might not  be an option online, you'll have to call. You will need the music interface if you want to use your ipod which is located under the center armrest.
Privacy glass is what they use in newer A8's, although not as good. Its basically a dual plane window so less noise gets into the interior, it shouldn't mess with your radar detector, not that you'll need one.
The Q7 is so freaking heavy it takes all day to get to 65 even with the v8 lol.

heh, good point.  Its going to take some getting used to that.  The S4 is a rocket of course, and the other cars in the fleet are all spry as well (Z06, Miata).  I'd like to go with the 4.2, but reading the "Car & Driver" review it seems like that may not be necessary.

The other thing I'm puzzling about is tire/wheel selection.  Not going to do any offroading, but the big 20s look like they'd be heck in the snow.  May call Luke at TireRack to get recommendations on winter rubber.

Liked the huge sunroof option, though I imagine that turns the car into a blast furnace in the summer.

Yeah its true the 3.6L VR6 has a pretty surprising amount of torque for a six cylinder. It gets up and goes pretty damn good actually. Most of the audi factory wheels come with all season tires which should be fine is rain and snow, but watch out for dealers that put aftermarket wheels on them and try and sell them because they put terrible rubber on them usually.
The full sunroof option doesn't get the hot actually either because there is a retractible safari mesh thingy that keeps the interior pretty cool. If you don't use it oh hell yeah it get hot!!!

Just get a good all round tire if you're not planning on driving TOO much in the snow. If you live in the mountains or where it snows half the year its not a bad idea to get 2 sets. Also a word of the wise is to avoid chrome wheels in winter conditions. Salts and other snow reducing methods your DOT uses can ruin the crime. If something gets under the chrome it will be like cancer, spreading throughout the entire wheel.

 The 20" wheels/tires come with a M&S rated tire. So you should be ok in average snow conditions. Though 20" isnt the obvious best choice if you lived in a snowy area. The 21" is a summer only and there are no snow tires available in that size that I know of.

Definatley get the sunroof. Its very nice. If you dont get it, you get nothing as there is no other sunroof option. When the sun is beating down, we just cover up with the sunshade and no more heat problem. The Q7 has been an absoulte pleasure to drive. Im very pleased in just the short few weeks we have owned it.
