Default cabriolet power window cables?

we replaced the window motor on the driver's side door and it chewed up the steel cables that go around the pulleys and raise and lower the window. We fabricated some new cables and they just kept snapping or not rolling the window up or down all the way. Has anyone had to replace these cables, or have a procedure? the dealer wants $500+ just for the cables, it's like $1.20 of steel wire!
