I'm about to change my timing belt, trying to put the engine at TDC. Everybody is talking about a TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley, but I just can't find any obvious mark on the shaft or on the pulley. Can anyone help? Mine is a 99 A6 2.8 30V
Thanks..

Look harder man its there, use a good flash light and rotate the engine over by hand until you see that notch on the crank pulley, when you do use some white out on it so you don't lose it again.

Auditech79, so it is on the pulley, not the shaft, right? would you have a picture of it? Thanks.

Use a timing light and some white out to mark TDC. Should be fairly easy to read with the light.

timing light is only useful when the engine is running and as its a refit of new parts this is not practical ( not that you could do anything even with it because its computer controlled ) the timing that is, fitting a new timing belt is a static thing ( remove and replace );)

true..I didn't think that the engine wasn't running due to the T-Belt ...duh..DISMISS ADVICE!
