face lift?
 

after reseraching body styling, i have come to notice that they seprate 2002+ with facelift and 97-2001 pre facelift

what do they mean by face lift?

The pre-facelift have a rounded main grille opening while the facelift have a squared off (at the bottom) grille opening. This is the most obvious difference, that and the chrome surround on the lower grille.

thanks man, seems like that was the only difference

the face lifts have the rs6 syle front bumper already on it, jus the mesh of the grill is different

incorrect, the rs6 bumper is completely different in design. take a look again. rs6 bumper will fit onto a 4.2/S6 but not on the 2.7T/2.8 or 3.0 which is the narrow body.

Actually not quite. I don't know exactly what you mean by style, but the RS6 bumper has larger lower grills, mesh grill inserts that will not fit the facelift models, different indentation pattern, obviously flared fenders, satin finished aluminum trim, completely different foglights, different center grill, low overhang...its like a completely different bumer.

by rs6 style i mean, they went with a bigger lower grill then the 01's and they also added the chromed out trim on the now larger lower grill. the rs6 bumpers style is a large lower chromed trim, same style. a noob would think the 2 bumpers are the same. the motorheads kno the differences

I see what you mean. I actually thought they changed the grill and bumper (and added the chrome trim) to simulate the look of the B6 A4 without changing the entire platform (and thus adding exposed exhausts as well)?

I'd say they did a good job - sometimes I can't tell if its a B6 A4 or a facelift A6 when its coming straight on towards me. The first thing I usually notice is the headlights - C5 is all chrome, while the B6 A4 looks more like the allroad with two circular reflectors/projectors and dark housings.

Definitely like the exposed exhausts in the rear for the facelifts. (I'm jealous - mine doesn't have them)
