Default Odometer display - 97 A6

My odometer display can no longer be seen (appears to be a burnt out light). It can only be seen when the sun is shining directly on it. A local garage told me the dash would have to be disassembled to fix it. Is this really the case for what appears to be a simple light bulb? HELP!

Yes, it's a bit of a pain to replace dash lights. As I remember, my '95 required disabling the air bag and pulling the wheel before I could remove the instrument cluster. If you decide to get that far, replace all the little dash bulbs while you're in there. Test each new bulb with an ohmmeter before you plug them in. You didn't want to take it apart again did you?

I'm not sure it's an easy bulb replacement. The cluster display is not connected to the instrument light which illuminate the cluster when the lights are on. The display runs off the printed circuit board. I think you may need a cluster replacement. Remanufactured clusters are available at your dealer. While you may be able to replace it yourself, the dealer will have to reprogram the mileage to the new cluster. The new odometer will read 0. The mileage is also logged in the BCM. Good Luck
