Has anyone driven a 2002-2003 S8 and a 4.2 A6?  What were your impressions of the bigger S8?  Does the S8 feel sporty?  Thanks in advance.

ask Baskin 4.2l, he's got the S8 motor in his a6, but he might have driven one before he got the motor. i'd ask him because i've never even seen one around here let alone driven one.

If you are anywhere near Raleigh, NC there is a S8 at Olde Raleigh Motors off of Glenwood Ave.

If you are that hard up to find out how it drives in comparison to an A6/4.2 I can take it for a test drive some time this week.

Khardys

Just to verify...

I will take time out of my busy schedule to drive around in a luxurious sports sedan for a member, because members are important.  It would be purely for the benefit of you, man.  I will take no joy in test driving this car for you, other than knowing that it is for your benefit and gain of knowledge.   ...:::I wonder how comfortable the seats are:::...

Again, let me know and I can run over and get the skinny on her.

You'd do that for me?  That's awesome!  I have my friend in Chicago driving to Naperville to drive a 2.7T A6 6-speed since I've only driven the autos here in KC.  We have none of the cool used Audi's around here.  I'm going to an Audi auction in a few weeks with an auto broker friend of mine.  They will have hundreds of used, newly off lease Audi's with warranty's and if they have anything that I like in a 2.7T A6, 4.2 A6 or S8, I will buy one, but I want to know how they drive.

Just go and rent Ronin, it will give you a good feel for the S8, lol. But on a serious note, the S8, being an S model might have some sportier attributes, but its bigger and heavier. Im not sure about that one, Ive always wondered myself. Ive also wondered how the 32 valve S8 motor has more performance aspects than the 40 valve 4.2. Maybe someone can elaborate...

I believe the major difference, or easiest to explain as a newbie, is the S8 engine has 40 or 60 more horse.  Other than that I would expect the suspension and some things inside are better/different.  I'm sure it weighs a couple hundred more pounds than us.  I can research more, but I'll have to wait until later.  I'll stop by and look at the sticker for the S8 on the way home.  It is conveniently located between here and the house.

A6 4.2 = 300 HP and 296 TQ
S8 4.2 = 340 HP and  300+ TQ

S8 is a bigger/heavier/longer car. My A6 has every option and package known to the S8 except for solar panel cooler. This is in the 2001 year. You get better handling and sportiness out of the A6 all day long.

How about the S6?  Has anyone driven or owned one of those?  Now that I'm considering an automatic it's opening an entirely new world of awesome Audi's for me to consider that I didn't know existed!

pm'd.

As far as being open minded about the automatic transmission, you can swap that out and get a 5MT or 6MT for about $3k+install.

Serious?  I'd get the 4.2 in a heart beat if I knew I could put in a 6 speed!  Have many people done that?

The only verifiable one that I know of is Baskin 4.2l.  There is a video of his car here: http://www.vastperformance.com/movies/B6%20S4%20vs.%20A6--S8%20engine%20(v1).wmv

S6 is a 340 HP 4.2 liter with auto and tip -- for middle age
S8 is the same motor just a bigger car -- for grandpa...just like the 740IL and the Benz C500

Definitely get the S8

The car is more than worth it. I wanted a sleeper that is why I did my upgrade. If I was to do it again.......I would still get the A6 but I would still do the modifications to the motor and trans. The S8 has a much more aggressive gear than the A6 3:73 to a 2:73 it makes the car feel like a rocket. S8 all the way

P.S. thanks for the props guys....I still am trying to make the 4.2L a force to be reconed with

Smoking a 13.2 car is serious.  Going back to that old hotrod recipe- relying on displacement and good tune over power adders like nitrous and forced induction.  Does Baskin's car have a Unichip or some other custom ECU tuning?  Any pics of the exhaust?

I'd still like to hear more about the mechanical differences that make the S8 stronger than the A6 4.2....Bet better headers, intake manifold and a more aggressive tune could do it.

Good stuff.

There are more mods for the A6 that will make it even sportier. Alot of guys did the Hotchkis front and rear sway bar upgrade. I gave in and did it and it makes a HUGE difference.  Cut out the resonator and you get more power and a nice refined exhaust sound

Finally the primary reason is that the C5 A6 4.2 style wise hold up much better today vs the old S8. You'll find alot of people that say the last gen A6 looks better than the current one. Just a timeless rolling work of art. Can't beat the 4.2's flared fenders! I added chrome mirror, smoke taillights and S6 grill and 5 spoke RS6 wheels to freshen up the look
I saw an previous gen A8 the other day and it looked old with the blocky taillights. You will find few to none that prefer the old S8 styling compared to the new one. The new one is my dream car !!

Thanks guys.  Eventhough the S8 has the best engine, I'd have to agree that it looks older than it is.  While the S6 does look more like a middle aged guy car, I think with some nice rims, tint and lowering it would look very aggresive.  I guess I'll get an A6 4.2 or S6, whichever one i find the best deal on first.  I'll let you know.
