Default Fuel fumes in interior of 88 Audi A90

Greetings-I need some advice please!A new to me (1988 Audi A90 - standard inline 4 automatic- fw drive) is fumigating the interior cab with gas fumes. I've replaced the fuel sending unit gasket which was dubious, checked the lines and injectors for leaks (can't find any), and other than a singing fuel pump, I'm at a loss (so is my mechanic) to figure out what is going on or what is causing this. It also seems to me that my mileage totals are ridiculously low. The fumes are especially noticeable after being parked for a while and when driving with a window open.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what this problem could be? I'd be most grateful for your help!

Cheers ~
