the car is solid, and looks great and drives great but it is these little expensive problems. I don`t know if i should get a newer one or fix this 84. Most newer 5000 audis would have more mileage, but might be fully serviced with evrything working. any suggestions??</P>

My first Audi was an '86 5000s. Over the five years I had it, it proved to be an enjoyable, soild car. I'll list my experiences with the problems you have, and you'll have to decide if the car is worth the time and expense.

I replaced the hydraulic pump complete with a rebuilt unit. This unit not only powers the steering, but provides pressure for the brakes -- there's little room for error when executing a do-it-yourself rebuild. I also replaced two leaking pressure lines.

I rebuilt my front driveshafts with new German outer joints, cleaned and repacked the inners with new boots.
If you get the urge to buy the complete front shafts from the local parts emporium for $59.95 -- don't.

The exhaust manifold on the five cylinder tends to break manifold studs and warp -- mine was no exception. I replaced the studs with 8mm stockers, except for the two on the ends -- those I replaced with 3/8" x 16 SAE's that I tapped the head for. I had the manifold surface-planed to straighten it out. It didn't warp again.

I replaced two window regulators and several window switches. TV tuner spray sometimes works at reviving the switches for a time.

I had to replace the AC condensor once -- it's a pretty bulletproof system.
