View Full Version : Mudding with some bad results!
NYankee 04-29-2007, 06:51 PM so the other day it rained like a bitch out here and behind my school is a giant field. Well with all the rain it turned to mud, and all the guys thought it would be fun to go mudding. we ended up goin out, my bud was in his a4, I was in my other friends truck, and we had a WRX with us too. ( I def did not want to take my FWD cabriolet out in the mud, that is just asking for trouble.) So we went out and were having a great time, some people got stuck everyonce and awhile but we would just pull them out with the truck winch. So we were cahorting in the a4 when we saw the WRX get stuck. We thought no problem, we will just go get him. well driving over in the truck it got stuck cuz the mud was so deep, so we had to enlist some help just to get that unstuck. well we could not get to the WRX so the driver kept tryin to get it out, and blew out the turbo, and threw a rod. so we had to leave it there untill the field dried out. That ended out great time. so now he has a car stuck, and an engine to rebuild which i find kinda funny. But thats my great mudding story.

My dad used to go mudding in his 1972 Land Rover. When you're stuck, the key is to go slowly, not race the engine till it explodes. Digging yourself into a pit is no way to get out of anywere[&:]
myaudi98 05-01-2007, 01:34 PM You all should invest in a allroad! hahaha jk
I almost bought an allroad. It was either that or the A4, but the allroad they had was an automatic and I wanted to auto-x so, yeah, stick wins. ^^
NYankee 05-02-2007, 07:41 PM ha ha I dont even think an Allroad would have made it out of this stuff, he just didnt keep his momentum up. it defiently needed to be towed out. well he learned his lesson 4 grand later.
stick is def the way to go,i could not imagine driving a preformance or off road vehicle with out one.
With the right tires and driver skill, and if the vehicle isn't up over its wheel wells in mud, you can get out if you have patience. The key is to crawl and not dig yourself four little pits.
myaudi98 05-03-2007, 12:57 PM Tires make the difference, audi and subaru dont have the tires for offroading. My allroads tires arent even that great offroad. But some good ones could have got you out. But who puts mudders on a subi or audi?

But who puts mudders on a subi or audi?
Audis not that many. Subarus well more than u think the ones from the 1980s with part-time 4x4 with high and low can do some amazing stuff!
When my audi gets real old i was thinking about trying to lift it and put some off-road tires on it how cool would that be?
myaudi98 05-03-2007, 06:29 PM yeah, i have seen some old imprezas with big tires.. havent seen any wrx's though. I would love to put some big tires on mine to see what it could do!
seattlea6 05-08-2007, 10:57 PM Big tires on an Audi? I don't think its physically possible, even if you lifted it. I think you would end up blowing the engine when it got too sticky, like the WRX. big tires have more resistance when used in mud, causing more stress. I almost killed my old exploder offroading in the mud.
vnv727 06-18-2007, 03:20 AM cause most people, ie who dont have experiencing off roading or grew up on a farm, think the way to get out is to rock it back and forth reving so hard theyre bouncing off the rev limitier.....its really hilarious, i can drive my fwd saab in well over a foot of snow all day long, passing jeeps becuase they have no clue how to drive.....in the mud or in snow knowing how to drive is even more important than the vehicle:)
vnv727 06-18-2007, 03:21 AM also how do u get a truck with a winch stuck???? thats like, the real purpose of having a winch on a truck to pull YOURSELF out if you do get in a bad spot....couldve hooked it up to another truck and slowly crawled out together
SephA4 06-22-2007, 12:32 AM Thing is to move slowly but never stop. I remember mudding in my 87 Mustang. Not by choice though. I was learning stick in my mustang with my dad on a dirt backroad when it started pouring. And since the road got blocked off, I had to pull a U-turn. Only way to pull it off was to go down this hill and come up on the other side. I'm surprised my car got back up the hill.
myaudi98 06-25-2007, 06:10 PM I never had problem in the snow in my 5.0 lx. Its all about taking it easy on the car. When you are spinning tires faster, its not helping. Go easy on it, constant throttle at low rpm is key. and i agree with vnv, if i had winch on my car, i would be going everywhere no worries!
a42point8awd 09-22-2007, 02:24 AM winch only helps when there is something to attach it to, doesn't help in a field in the middle of no where.
myaudi98 09-26-2007, 11:41 AM thats why you always bring a freinds truck with you. lol
Burzum 01-14-2008, 02:37 PM When you're stuck in the middle of nowhere with a winch you can still use it to get unstuck. If you bury something (like a spare tire or a log) about 3 feet under ground, far ahead of your vehicle, with your winch cable attached you can use that to pull yourself out.
mcicoria 02-12-2008, 09:27 PM Regarding the comment about tires, I run dedicated snow tires on my a6 and outback wagons. Where I am in NH, spring time is known as mud season and I keep the winter tires on until almost May. They are very helpful for traveling on muddy dirt roads, though I'm not sure how that would translate to the muddy field noted above.
TommyGunns 02-14-2008, 03:28 PM My first car was an AMC Eagle sedan. There was a corn field that I would like go mudding in. It had cheap onroad tires that were tall and skinny, and I never got stuck. That car could do some amazing things.
