Soap for Cleaning car?
 

Is it ok to use liquid hand soap to clean your car. I do not have anymore car soap and was wondering

Is it ok? Yes. Recommended? No.

Using a detergent or hand soap has strong cleaners in it and will strip off any protection on your paint (previous coats of wax or sealants). It can also have the tendency to dry out trim, rubber seals, plastic, etc. and is not recommended using it on a regular basis. To me, it would be worth a trip down to the automotive store and pick up some Duragloss shampoo (or your other shampoo of choice). If you'd like to try some that we carry, I'd recommend Poorboy's Super Slick & Suds or P21s Bodywork Conditioning Shampoo.

i use dawn, its very light soap.

Just keep in mind that you are removing any protection after you wash with Dawn so if you wash on a weekly basis, you'd have to reapply a sealant or wax on a weekly basis. This yields a lot of wasted time and product. Plus over time, Dawn can dry out your trim, such as plastic, rubber and vinyl. It's ok to wash with Dawn when you are trying to strip everything down and start over, a couple of times a year, but it is not recommended to use on a regular basis.

DO NOT use any house hold soap! It's not made for the car, it's made to remove pig fat from your dishes! [:'(]

Seriously, it really dulls the paint, & can remove any oils in the paint, adding to any oxidation. Really the only time you use any dish soap is when you are stripping silicones from the paint for a full detail. Even then I don't like to use it. Dish soap, also doesn't have any lubricants in it, so you will put scratches in the paint.

Go & purchase any Auto soap, it will be far better. Poorboys stuff is good & cheap, I like it.

I use the Ibiz or Rain-x soap, very nice light suds.

I've used Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo in a pinch. It worked really well.

i know, i put on a layer of carnube wax or some other protective wax and then go over it with a layer of wax which is solely for shine. so i get both protection and shine. i only do this when i hand wash my car otherwise i take it the touchless carwashi work at.
