Stupid question but what better place to raise it? I've never been here before, I've browsed two pages of the A6 forum and I did not do a search so flame away if my question blows.

So here's the dealio. I'm a green horn. Years ago when the VW VR6 first hit the streets I bought one and loved it. I had a Prosche 928 prior. German cars are nice. Had wanted an A4 for years could not afford one. Anywho, we stopped in to a local VW dealer on saturday. I wanted to check out a low priced All-Road. The wife spotted a black A6. We drove it. She loves it. Yeah I made a long story out of this but some may want back ground so I gave it.

My question: Is the A6 4.2 Quattro a car to avoid? Other than the normal stuff to any car, what things should I look for when considering purchase? Will gas milliage suck? Would we be better off with a 3.0 Quattro?

The wide body of the 4.2 was attractive. My wife did not notice a difference when we drove a 3.0 later in the day but I did. I also noticed the 4.2 was loaded with many more features than the 3.0 was. Small stuff but cool factor all the same.

Last, should we buy the 6 year 100k mile warranty from the (well known) VW dealership selling the car? At $1800, I'm thinking it's a for sure thing since I have big questions when it comes to affordability of repair if and when this car needs it.

And one last question? Can someone point me to high res pics of a standard black A6 and a wide body? Might be nice to look at in case the wife starts thinking of dropping back to the 3.0.

Thanks much...

2002 model has a nicer dash (the same with red/white),stereo, tip-tronic controls on steering wheel, 6 CD in dash, instead of rear changer, rear amber lights.

2002-2003 are identical (except for color matched navigation anteanea)

I have a 2002 with 35k silver/black, navigation,parktronic,heated seats,etc. (perfect)

I just had the 40k done (free) full warranty, and free service until Oct. 2006

I love this car... I have had them all up to 80k

I have a 4 plex I am trying to buy and will sell mine for $29500 (cheap) This car is not advertised, and I am having a hard time trying to list it. (because I don't want to)

the 4.2 is a beutiful car I've always loved the 4.2's the assured warrenty is a must for sure you will be kicking yourself in the ass for sure if you don't get it the timing belt is comming soon so make sure you save some pennies away for this job the repair bill might not be to friendly but it is for sure going to have more options than a 3.0 and be a lot quicker than a 3.0 also

wow. that is a great price and an excellet car, man. don't even think about the 3.0 when you have a 4.2 to have. let's put it this way... that same 4.2... is doing time in the S4. S4 is obviously a smaller car... but... damn.
mileage looks great, price is awesome, engine is incredible, colour is amazing, and i'm gonna stop before i run out of adjectives

This is my 3rd Audi and also my favorite one. I have a 2003 A6 4.2 Black very similar to your picture. I drive 25K per year and the only thing that has gone wrong is my hazard light when out. It was a $33 dollar part. Great car!

In a word YES! That car looks great and a good price too! Get the warranty, make sure you get a low ($50) deductible and make sure it covers CV Boots and suspension parts. Other than that, I would not expect many problems. I have 93k on mine ( had it since 37k, I track the car at least once a month, one SMD a month, and drive the you know what out of it back and forth from work.
