You can pick up remanufactured alternators off the internet for a couple hundred plus core charge. Mine blew on the other side of the state and the closest repair was a dealership. They wanted $600 for the alternator and $500 to install. I convinced them to accept my drop-shipped alternator and they installed.

At the same time you do the timing belt you should do the water pump (make sure it has metal impellers), all the tensioners, the thermostat, and the serpentine belt. I got my parts from www.blauparts.com which also included the coolant. I thought I was saving but it turned out to the be same as my indie would have charged me for parts: $355. So as 2k S4 says, let your shop supply the parts as long as he warrants them. The rebuild took 6 hours of shop time. Total tab was $805.
