K04 vs. Gpopshop K04
 

1.) I want to buy now. . . some say the gpopshop is satisfying, others say it is restrictive, simply a "mock" K04. . . ?

2.) I intend to upgrade chip/software and exhaust, what other upgrades would be necassary to get optimum performance? What kind of chip, software, exhaust is recommended?

3.) Also, if i don't go with Gpopshop - where would be a reasonable place to purchase a K04 turbo? What are the price differences? What are performance differences, whp etc?
(i have heard they come fairly cheap in the classifieds. . . true? i didn't have much luck searching )


I don't want to waste a lot of money, and I am somewhat rookie to performance modding on a B5 so ALL the tips and advice and opinions are more than welcome!

1.the gpop one is more restrictive.
2. GIAC pc-16. you would need injectors, fmic, a real k04, milltek/2.75" custom exhaust,
3. cheapest would be to watch the forums for a used one.. i saw one guy selling a lot of new ones for a good price in the classifeids not to long ago, dont know if he still has them

Ko3 and K04 housings are the exact same external dimensions - the K04 just has a little better flow and larger turbines. G-popshop machines your/their K03 into a K04 housing and then installs the propper turbines to make it run as a k04. So If anyone has any proof that it is more restrictive and will not function as well as a "real k04" I would like to see it. Otherwise your just talking out your ass about something you really have no idea about.

The upgraded K03 should not be restrictive in any way. It's not like they put a NASCAR style restrictor plate on it or anything, the K04 and K03 share the same housings and all, they just have different compressor wheels and such.

This turbo can be upgraded to a K04spec for additional $100

The K04 compressor wheel used in our upgrade is slightly larger than the stock compressor wheel in a K04-15. The turbine wheel in the stock 703J turbo is a little over 1 milimeter smaller than the K04-15 turbine wheel. The upgrade gives you K04-15 performance without the expense of purchasing a new K04.
This upgrade is good for up to 210hp. Power as quoted will only be achieved with modified ECU. The turbo comes with a full 12month/unlimited mile warranty (see our warranty page for more details


Thats the price ontop of 400 for there K03, unsure how much it cost to send in your own K03 and have it done but I'd imagine its cheap, I'm assuming... It says 210hp with modified ECU.. is that at the crank? Seems to be. I'm guessing with Testpipe, FMIC, Exhaust, Intake, Good tunning you could push it up another 40hp with no problems since it says it has the same size turbine... K04's can put down 220whp correct?

Yeah, K04 you can get about 220whp out of it. The turbo alone won't do that, but it's not impossible or unreasonable to expect that kind of horsepower. FMIC, intake, exhaust, chip, injectors, vinyl, and exhaust tips. Totally need the exhaust tips.

I have heard that(<read it somewhere) both AWE and APR(for b6 reference) modify the K04's they sell to produce more power. I don't know what they do or even if its true, so anyone that comes on here quoting their #'s know's the #'s might be more due to this reason.

Hey thanks for all the input. . . As i have stated in previous posts i am fairly new to performance modding so i still have a few questions:

1 - What exactly is a "GIAC pc-16" is that some kind of chip or software?
2 - Any preferences on injectors?
3 - I was under the impression that 2.5" piping exhaust would be suffecient, is that not true?
4 - I was also under the impression that it was not necessary to upgrade our intakes for the k04? This wrong too?
5 - As for the FMIC, any preferences on those either around here??

6-As i understand so far, to get the best performance out of a K04/Gpop K04

Intake
Exhaust w/ testpipe/hi flow cat

Correct me if i'm wrong

Any other opinions out there? What has worked for those of you who have done this??

giac pc-16 is an agressive file made for ko4 - be aware that it also does require bigger injectors as well, something like this:

intakes dont HAVE to be upgraded, the stock one is better than most aftermarket BUT as long as you do it properly, then it's ok if you wish to do it (just have a good heat shield if you go with a cone!)

for the fmic, they arent cheap .. someone else can back me, but i've heard pretty decent things about going to egay for them...
