Default a4 tiptronic

Hey guys,
I am looking into buying an a4. I know that the manual tends to get a little better gas mileage, but the question i have i about the tiptronic. Would the tiptronic let me shift at a lower RPM then a normal automatic would shift, in turn saving me some gas? I have heard that the tiptronic does not always shift when the driver wants it to. Thanks

I don't really use the manual shift option but when I have it does have a slight lag in shifting, not much but it is noticable. I drove a six speed for years so I'm lovin the auto
