I got the same thing out of my B6 A4.  "EVAP Emission control..."  Last week my front passenger tire blew out and it cut a small black tube that runs just behind the wheel.  I removed the damaged part and patched it with a new piece and the engine light came back on.  Do you guys have any idea what may be wrong with the car?

Thanks

The evap incorrect purge flow will most likly be caused by a vacuum leak somewhere between the fuel tank and the point where the evap purge valve dumps its vacuum into the engine.  In many cases the evap purge valve sticks causing it to bleed vacuum when its supposed to be closed or not allow vacuum to flow when voltage is applyed to the valve.  You can check that with a vacuum pump and a scan tool to activate the valve.

Another possiblitly is a saturated charcoal canister.  This usually happens when a fuel tank is topped off to far.  If this is the case you most likly will have fuel in the line at the evap purge valve.  Or at least some wet fuel residue on the line.

Is the EVAP PURGE VALVE something you can check with a vag com tool?  I dont have a shop manual for the car but would like to fix this problem myself since it doesnt seem like it's too difficult.  Where is this valve located on the B6 cars?  Can you explain with a little more detail how you do this test with a vacum pump?

Question, why are you posting about a B6 A4 in an A6 forum?
The N80 valve your looking for is right on top of the air box, it usually make a clicking noise.

Sorry, I just did a search about the code I got and this seemed to be the most relevant one that I found so I posted here.

Thanks for the diagrams Dave, my car has the 1.8T engine but I assume the valve location is the same.

Dave, based on the problem i had with my tire blowing out and taking out that line what else do you think I should try if the EVAP purge valve tests fine?  I'm used to working on old american musle cars with more simple engine bays so any help would be appreciated.

It wouldn't happen to be your right front tire that blew out would it?

Yes, right front tire blew out, the rubber debris cut some of the plastic lining inside the wheel well.  I put the spare tire and continued driving the car, the next day CEL light came on.  The following day I took it to get a new tire and when they raised it I noticed a black plastic line running behind the wheel along the bottom of the car was shredded up.  I cut the damaged part and added a piece of fuel line from autoparts store and clamped it on both sides without pinching the line.  Cleared CEL by disconnecting battery and next day it came back on.  That light is really annoying and I want to do as much work as possible on my own before I have to take it to a shop.

Those are your EVAP lines that run right behind the right front tire, thats your problem. You can either replace the whole lines PITA! or try and cut and tape them up as best you can.

interesting all the facts are cool and could help in the diagnosis but yes the offside tyre ( your passenger side is where the carbon canister is and evap is in the engine compartment ) they are both linked

Yeah i've done a couple repairs for blown tires in the right front just like his car, it happens even more on the A6 though.

I thought I fixed the broken part of the EVAP line.  How much is a new line and how hard is it to change (ballpark).  I noticed a fitting close to the area where the line got damaged behind the wheel.  It seems to be a 90 degree fitting that sends the EVAP line up into the engine bay area do you think maybe that got damaged as well?

Yeah your gonna have to take off some body panels and maybe the fender liner on the passenger's side to get a better look at the hoses.
