Default Urgently need help with an A4 Fuel Filter

I have a 1999 A4 with the 2.8L V6 and tonight when I came home, I smelled a strong odor of gasoline. I looked under the car and on the right side, next to the tank there appears to be some kind of a canister style gas filter that appears to be made out of aluminum. That's the problem, the aluminum is corroded where the 17mm fitting (banjo style fitting) is located and it's leaking a steady drip. Is this filter something that can be bought over the counter at an Audi dealer and can it be changed by a shade tree mechanic? Also, if there is a fitting in the bottom, where is the other fitting located? One more question, in order to change this filter, does the entire fuel tank need to be emptied? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!
Respectfully,
Ed
