I have a 1990 Audi 5-Speed with the 2.0L four cylinder engine. Its really slow to accelerate. When my foot is buried on the accelerator it takes forever to get up to speed. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be. I was also wondering what other engines fit into this car. If its a 1990 can the 2.3L 5 cylinder fit in? Thanks in advanced.

check for excess slack in the accelerator cable ( a little trick I used to do for parents ) to prevent the kids from getting the full power of the engine

Let me try to explain in better detail what I have noticed. When the engine is cooled off and the engine temperature is "cold" it has more pull in acceleration then if it was running at normal engine temperature or hot slightly above it. I'll be in 4 gear for example doing 35 at about 2,500rpms I think and when I stomp on the accelerator to the floor the car bearly accelerates at all. It takes about 3-4 seconds before it pulls a little bit. I also noticed I had a huge hole in my muffler which can be restricting something.

I talked to my friend about it and he says it has to do with pressure of the valves or something along those lines. Any more insight is much appreciated.

nothing to do with valves unless its an automatic, personally if its a manual tranny I would put it down to incorrect use of the gears ( no one stomps the throttle in 4th and expects it to take off try using lower gears for that

Here's what I did for my 1988 90 same engine, and similar problems. I disconnected the cold start valve. Poof!!! That fixed the problem all together!!! Got my acceleration back!!!

Check for air leaks, looks like running lean.  Could be belion other reasons, but simply check the tubes, then see if there dirt in places, when cold it adds more fuel to run, and that could add enough fuel to correct for leaks.
