right where auditech said. It has a band around it that can be hard to loosen. There will be a lot of gas spillage so get some towels, rags, or newspapers.

Is there a special Audi specific tool to remove the bolt that holds the band/filter? The one on mine looks like a "torx" type but has a different design.

It is nice to buy new metal washers.  You need total of 4, 2 of them are smaller than the other 2.  As for not making the mess, pull your fuel pump fuse out, run the car until it dies, then crimp the inlet and outlet lines with line crimpers.  Otherwise, you will have fuel spraying everywhere, like I did.

great - thanks for the tip.

I bought the filter already....where can I get the washers from? I don't recall seeing them offered when I got the filter.

glad I didn't pull the filter off before getting new washers...thanks!

I got my washers from ECS.  Considering the washers are 50 cents or so, might want try local hardware store to save on shipping cost and time.  They are aluminum washers.
