ive been in love with the audi a6 for quite a while now. im 16 years old i have my drivers permit. and i get my license july 26 of this year (2007). ive been searching all over the internet for a6's around 7 or 8 thousand dollars. i found 2 that are close to me. One was a green 98 2.8 with terracotta interrior ( ugly brown ). i wasnt to crazy about that but u kno its the audi i want and i dont have a lot of money to play with so i can deal with that. so my mom and i drive down to an audi dealer and asked them about it. It sold last night. of couse.lol so we asked them if they could look around for a6's around that price range. they said sure .. u kno.the 'used car manager' looked like he was thinking for a second or two and said u know what i have a 2000 a6 4.2 i was like yeah but how much..hes like 8800. that around my price range.. ..but u kno u can almost ALWAYS bring them down. he calld oveor one of the sales man and said show them 'mr browns' white 4.2 a6 in the back behind the service center. ( apparently mr brown is a well known customer to them, since he refered to him as mr brown and no 'that white a6' lol u know what i mean..before we went back the manager told us that the car had a few flaws in the back bumper on teh side ..and it was an attempted theft. my mom and i both looked at each other and were like well idk.. i said uhmm ATTEMPTED theft ? he said yeah. so the salesman brought us back to look at it.. i picked it out of the many cars that were back there.i said this is it isnt it.. hes like why yes it is..lol ok what im trying to get at is.. the drivers side door keyhole was completely taken out. and a huge gouge around that area. onon the back bumper there is a large scuff mark.. or traded paint i guess.. like he was parallel parked and the car behind him was pulling out and swiped up against it. im guessing. not that big of a deal. the front bumper onn the left side was pulled away from the rest about a 3/4 inch crack. again not really a big deal but will be needing fixing. the car was extremely dirty. even tho i knew what the wheels looked like someone who didnt wouldnt be able to tell what they look like they were so dirty. if u kno what i mean. they are the five spoke wheels with the large thick spokes. the salesman told us that all of the flaws on the car would be fixed.and the door panel would be replaced. 8800 seemed like an excellent deal. it has 98 thousand miles. supposedly.. we werent allowed to go inside or take a test drive or anything until thats stuff was all fixed... my mom called the dealer on friday night and asked if the car would be ready by saturday morning like he said it would be.. he said no it should be ready monday or tuesday of this coming week. we sadi ok.. and he said the final price is 7900$ i was like holy sh*t!.. my question to u guys is do you think this is a damn good deal or is it too good to be true and the cars a lemon..should buy it... afterrrr i test drive it on monday or tuesday of this week. thanks so much in advance ill definately post of i find out any more.
At 17 years of age an eight year old Audi will bankrupt you, especialy an attempted theft.

I would tell you not to buy it because it would be a very bad financial decision. Your social life would be over, your finances would be depleted, and your legs would get sick of walking to Pizza Hut to try to pay for this 8k dollar car sitting in your driveway that has a bad (____) and you can't afford it. But knowing you are 16 and if you are at all like me at 16, then you will ignore any logical advice and just do what you want anyways. I would first ask the dealer if the timing belt has been changed. If not, you will need to save your pennies for a timing belt job. Do a search and you will find any answers you want to know about it. Other than that, the car will only need the normal German car maintinence items. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that the V8s have a tb or a chain.
As far as everyone at the dealer knowing Mr. Browns car, they probably have a bet going on as to who can sell that pos first. Maybe they own it since Mr. Brown couldn't pay his last repair bill. Maybe it's a lemon and they all know the car from the years of Mr. Brown bringing it in for yet some more work. I'm kidding, I'm sure it is a nice car, thats what makes and Audi and Audi, they are all nice cars and they are built well. After 10 years you can get into one and still be amazed at how well it was put together. The crisp sound the door makes as it's shutting. Just don't shut that door too hard, you don't want the car falling off those jack stands.
Best of luck, buy a Mazda

I agree 100%
Rule of thumb when buying the average used car,you need to have $1,500 extra laying around for repairs.
But a used german car....2-3K... All the parts are close to double the average used jap and american cars. So repair bills twice the size, Only 1/4 of the mechanics out there even know how to work on them. And they all charge an arm and a leg for repairs.

Listen to what everyone is saying because they are right. Unless your pockets are pretty deep that car will break you. I have a 2000 A6 2.7 and I've probably had about $9000 in repairs over the last 6 months. Thank God for an aftermarket warranty. I still spent about $1000. Turn and run from that car. You could very easily run into $7900 in repairs alone over the first year.Good luck.

DON'T buy that car! I'm in the business (sales manager) and if you are not allowed to look at a car that the dealer owns, he's hiding somethings from you. Besides, that price is $2000 too high for that car.
I agree with everyone else, buy a Focus or other small common car. You will be spending THOUSANDS on this car.

For first car I would recommend a used civic, i know its a world apart from that Audi but damn is that car reliable. Believe me dude, my first civic, put 30k miles in the first year and never had to do nothing but change oil (sometimes even forgot ha!) and put regular gasoline, and i reckon i really treated that car badly since the missing horsepower i made from reving to 8k rpms lol..oh when i was younger [:'(]Buy a Civic, get a job, save lots of cash, buy a lower mileage Audi

i wouldnt buy that from them,i would go on autotrader.com and look some more, sometimes they have 98 a6's for the same price and with far less mileage

Put it this way...the 4.2's fully loaded and optioned to the max ran 60k when new. To get a good one with service done, and in excellent shape will still run you close to 18k perhaps more. 8k for that ride and i would be running. I would buy a bus pass before picking that thing up.
Mr. Brown prolly refers to s**t BTW. There are always jokes in the business. I know,I worked in it for years.

I know how it is to want a car that just won't work out. My first car way a 1991 Potiac Grand Am and it never broke down in 2 years. It was just a point A to point B car. Liketeranenrique said just get a car that is relieable. I got my Audi after I had saved up for a while and worked and was about to back up any problems it had (so far none really) there was also the $3500 for the totaled Bonnivellethat helped a lot.and I also got it for college anda little bit after college so I will have this car for a while. Also quattros are good in the winter. Right now I would just geta car to get you from here to there and then geta nice one in a few years. Trust me the time will go fast

I too am 16 and I no how bad i wanted the Audi I bought. Luckily mine was in great shape (bought it from a family friend). I never spent any money cause i knew one day i would be buying a car that i actually would want to drive not some POS. So i fortunatly had about 5,000 left over after my purchase. But I must warn you with Premium gas and god forbid somethign breaks and you take it to the Audi Dealer to get fixed your gonna hafta fork over an Arm and a Leg to get yours fixed. But if you do get it the women will be all over you . Trust me ;)

Well here the deal, if the dealership offered a warrenty with it then do it...if not then dont...all they do is overcharge the stuff out of you that a6 probably has a theft recovery title and you would of had to go through the process of registering it legally....anyways....My first car was a 1989 Honda Civic 4 door $400.00 lol<<<by far one of my best cars lol....Cheap on everything. When something breaks their a dime a dozen of parts to be located....for a Audi...you better have a deep pocket like everyone said....I say get something you can afford..for now and when the right deal comes along then get it...

Its not that there is anything wrong with the A6's. What were saying is that you no when it comes time to do servicing that only Authorized Audi Mech's do things can really get pricey. I.E. Im a little over 100,000 miles in my A6 and its time to have the Timing Belt and Water Pump replaced. And taking that to the Audi Dealer is an easy 1k out of my pocket

None of you guys work on your own cars? I had a 2.8L that had 172k on it when I sold it. Next owner had over 225k on it when he sold it. All we ever did to it was water pump / timing belt, brake pads, oil changes, and tires. Oh andsome control arm bushings.
I'm looking for a 2.7t A6 or a b5 S4 next... I might even consider a B6 A4 1.8t but I think I want the room and comfort of the A6 since I'm 6'2".

do u think a 2000 audi a6 2.7t with 73,000 miles for 8700 is a good deal.. i saw it in my local newpaper last night should i bother looking at it or does the proce sound too low for the milage.?

I feel that is a reasonable price, but you are too young to be buying an A6. It will need a timing belt job done very soon. You have 1-1300k dollars saved up right? How about the control arms, have they been replaced yet? I feel like a jerk saying this but you don't understand what you are getting yourself into. An 8 year old European car will bankrupt a 16 year old. If you are set on getting an Audi, get yourself an older A4 for maybe 5k and use the rest of the money you have saved up for repairs. How about an early 90's bmw 3 series? Maybe a 318ti, 318i, an A6 is a maintenance whore in comparison to your civic. A dual turbo 50k dollar 8 year old European car in the hands of a 16 year old is a really bad idea.

arent bmw's just as expensive to get fixed?
Jeffla
07-22-2007, 05:41 PM
There is a lot less to go wrong on a 318 or 325. All European cars require a lot of maintinence. Far more than the average 16 year old will ever be able to afford. Bmw uses timing chains, not belts so you save the 1-1300k on that. They don't tend to go through control arms like I do cheese puffs and they are far less sophisticated. I am talking about early 90's 3 series bmws ONLY. They don't have turbos that can fail, the biggest downfall to them is the interiors were not glued together all that well. I again feel you should be looking at getting a used Mazda 3, Ford Focus, a newer Civic/Corola, Bmw 318ti/318/325i with manual transmission, or an older (95/96) A4.

Yes Jeff is right. I am 16 and i have an A6 but knowing what i was getting into i whored all the money i could get to save to be able to drive an A6 with all the duties they come with

07-23-2007, 08:42 PM
I'm17 and my first and onlycar so farwas an A6. If you would have to pay for all the maintinence then I dont know if you should do it. I payed for the car myself but there has been some things that needed to be fixed that I didnt pay for. So unless your working all year around or your parents are willing to help you its probably a bad idea.

I purchased my 99 a6 avant when I was 19 andso far it is running pretty well, i do need to do somelabor on it but im a DIY guy so i'll save on labor,i just need a manual(if anyone knows where to pick one up for cheap, that'd be much appreciated) i honestly don't think you should invest into an A6 as old as mine or the ones you're looking at because you will never know what will go wrong with it and repair bills will end up being almost as much as the car. I've read carfax on some A6's and they don't even hit 30k before they've been in the shop 4 times. look into the A4, its an entry level, but do you really need rear heated seats? or extra space?

Just to add to the comments about repairs and such...
I am 19 and I bought my A6 about 3 months ago. I knew it had bad tie rod ends, control arm and would need to get the timing belt done when I bought it. It also had fault codes for O2 sensors, a bad EGT sensor and coolant temp sensor. It was a 00 2.7t 6-speed. I paid only 7000 for it. As soon as i got it back i had to fix the front suspension problem. There was also a bad cv boot and joint. the repairs weren't too bad though. When it comes to suspension work, I don't have the experience and tools to do it so I took it to my local indy mech. Bill came to $660 that was for the cv joint and boot, lower control arm, tie rod ends, and 4 wheel alignment. Not bad.
And I did the coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor and Egt sensor myself. Got the coolant sensor for 5 bucks (normally 25), o2 for 80 bucks (normally 100 or so) and the EGT for $115 (usually like 300). I am thrifty when it comes to that kind of stuff. :)
Just got the timing belt service done by the same mechanic a couple of weeks back, cost me 900 bucks. Very reasonable.
So I got the car for cheap knowing I was going to put money into it and so far have spent around $1800 or so fixing things. But I am financially fine and living at home still LOL :D
So to go along with what people are saying, an Audi is not a 16 year old car. Unless mommy and daddy are taking care of everything. Btw, have you even considered the insurance for a 16 year old with a twin turbo or V8 engine?? Didn't think so....

I would get an A6 Audi over an E36 BMW anyday! I say this as the former owner of a 97 M3. $1000 for a drive shaft. $600 for the anti-theft device. $500 when another part of the anti-theft system died. Shocks and struts. Shock Mounting brackets and strut hats. Shock housings in the rear where the shock went through the housing! Control arms in the front. Bushings in the rear. Ball joints in the rear. Radiator every two years!!! Plastic headlights every 4 years. Fog lamps twice per year. Tie rod ends. Sway bar end links. Under tray plastic. Pork chops. Hood shocks. O2 sensors, 4 of them, at $150 each! Tires every 20,000 miles (and I considered this good mileage. Some people were getting 5,000 out of a set of rears). Fan blades broke off. Fan clutch. T-stat housing. Belt idlers.
You will be worlds better off with a Honda. You can learn to work on cars (and mod the s**t out of them!) on an older Honda at a lower cost (both if you do it right and if you do it wrong) OR you can find someone else that can do the work for you at a reasonable price.
