millenia -> no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 12:01:03 PM)

Hello, everyone. There is something weird going on with 1995 Audi A6. I start the car, when I press on the gas pedal, it gets to about 3 rpm's and than the car shutsoff. Me and my dad cheked the fuel filter that works and the fuel pump is good. Also we cheked the spark plugs, they work fine. So what could be causing this problem. Its 1995 Audi A6 FWD, I dont even know if it has the VAG-Computer port. Need help ASAP

So after 3000k rpm the car dies?  How do you know the fuel filter is good?  Were you able to check the flow rate?  Why is the fuel pump good, just because its running does not mean its working correctly.  Do you have the ability to pressure test the fuel system?  Was it running just fine yesterday?

Welcome to the world of old german cars, let the fun begin.   I don't believe a 95 would have the standard vag-com port.

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 12:36:59 PM)

well it looks like the fuel pump is in good shape, and the fuel filter looks to be fine, we usually deal with bimmers and benz's and only newer audis, so how would i get the fuel pressure???

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 12:38:25 PM)

the car started doing that when i was going up a hill on saturday

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 12:56:00 PM)

also i disconected the fuel line from the tank and wen u turn on the ignition, there is gas running at pretty good flow from the gas tank

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 1:02:48 PM)

also there is this hissing sound wen the car is running, is that normal???

slee22 -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 1:46:03 PM)

If there is a hissing, that could be a vacuum leak check your hoses.

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 1:52:13 PM)

i m new to audi's i m only 16, so which hoses should i check, the ones around the engine or under the car???

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 1:59:42 PM)

on rear part of the mufler there is a little hole, and the hissing is comming from the left rear side, thats where the mufler is, so could that be causing the problem?

P.S. the gas tank is above the muffler, it might be the fuel pump, probably has a vacum, so it might be a leak in the fuel line, but there is no gasoline dripping from bottom of the car, so anyone else got any ideas? also would my engine computer be doing that???

Jeffla -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 3:38:27 PM)

Just buy a new fuel filter, there cheap and people never change them anyways so your due for one..  I know on my car it is solid metal so I don't know how you could tell if it was good or bad by looking at it.  Also, just because the fuel pump is pumping does not mean it is pumping enough.  Check for vacuum leaks under the hood, I don't know this car at all, but assuming your 2.8 is the same as a 00 2.8, looked for cracked or broken hoses.  But my assumption is your fuel filter plugged, because you generally don't suddenly loose power over 3k.

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 4:12:06 PM)

well there is this hissing sound, and after the car shuts off, there is this hissing sound under the hood for about 30 seconds. well could i get the fuel filter off, with out taking the gas tank, and if i need to do that, how would i do, anyone got any diagrams or pics or instruction, thanks alot guys, to this point you helped me alot, thanks in advance[;)]

Jeffla -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 4:40:36 PM)

The search option is your best friend.  Look here for a general vacuum diagram : http://www.audiforums.com/m_529162/tm.htm

Also the best resourse for almost anything Audi is:  http://sonolithics.com/files/a6_links.html

Vacuum hoses have been known to suddenly fall off.  My old Saab 9k used to blow off this one hose all the time, causing the idle to get fuc*ed up.  The best thing you can do is spend the next two hours or so following every vacuum line you can see and seeing if it is in good condition or not.

thanks jeff, you've great help, thanks alot, preciate it

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 5:07:46 PM)

does the vacum line go around the whole car or just around the engine

kjbakke2 -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 5:28:01 PM)

the hissing sound could be your radiator
i knomw mine does it on my truck and thats brand new
just odd things of the car world i guess
so dont focus on the hissing sound too much

check your fuel lines
and your vaccumn lines under your hood.....start at your M.A.F. and work back
good luck

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 5:41:43 PM)

well fuel line is good the gas has good flow, i was thinking that the fuel filter is clogged up, but i m wondering how would i get it off the tank

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 5:51:54 PM)

where is the mfa

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 6:20:01 PM)

my dad is saying that the engine computer might be going bad, would something like that cause the problem?

Jeffla -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 6:50:02 PM)

I highly doubt your engine computer is bad.  You need to check your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.  Find a buddy that knows how to do it.  You obviously have enough fuel pressure to get the car to 3k, but do you have enough when the engine is loaded at 3k?  The ONLY way to test this, is with a fuel pressure gauge.  What specifically does your car do at 3k.  Does it just shut off, does it miss then die, if brought to 2999k and you take your foot off the gas does it recover or still die.  Does it start immediately after dying?  Be very specific on what it does at 3k, and how it dies.  Is your check engine light on?

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 7:12:16 PM)

Ok, so the car starts up choking a little, but it starts. It gets up to 2999k and if let it go, than it recovers, if i get to 3 or more, than the car shuts off like its choking and than i try starting it up and than it starts up.

99A6Q -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 8:06:56 PM)

sounds like it could be a idle air control module.  I had a 1995 Audi 90 with that problem.  If you were driving down the road and let of the gas it would just cut off.  A vacuum leak could also be suspect.  I am not sure if your car is equipped with it, but the 'hissing' sound that you speak of could be the secondary air pump that runs for about a minute when the car is cranked. Lack of fuel pressure could also cause this.  I dont see your fuel filter being clogged causing that though, that would cause it to run pretty crappy all the time.  There should be a port somewhere on the fuel rail that you can screw on a fuel pressure tester to see how much you have.

auditech79 -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 8:18:20 PM)

You need to start with the basics man, most likely its a dirty throttle body and or a vaccum leak.
Take off the hose to the TB start the engine and spray a whole bottle of chemtool carb cleaner down the intake while someone is flooring it (its gonna want to die) That should make it idle smooth as all hell.
If that doesn't fix it trace the hissing noise which is probably gonna be your vaccum leak. The most efficient way to search for a vaccum leak is to use a propane can and spray it around the engine when its running, if the rpm starts racing up you found the where the leak is. [;)]

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 8:45:55 PM)

where could i get propane can, and i need some more info, where the throttle vacum

auditech79 -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 8:55:54 PM)

Oh man, well the throttle body is the valve that controls your engine speed, or butterfly valve.
Follow the main intake line to the throttle body on the back of the engine if you have the 2.8L.
Take off the clamp on the throttle body, pull off the hose and you should see the big steel valve, when you press the gas pedal the throttle cable pulls open the valve and direct air into the engine, this is where you will be spraying in the chemtool. You can get a propane torch at any autoparts store or go to the home depot. Your not actually lighting the torch, just venting the propane around the engine.

millenia -> RE: no power, need help ASAP (7/16/2007 9:01:18 PM)

Will it be hard to find that and is it hard to reach that stuff. I'm just 16, and new to Audis, so sorry if I'll have some more questions I'm just getting fimiliar with the car. I love the car its just it started doing it on Saturday after noon when I was comming home and I was going up  a hill in my neighborhood. Is there a diagram that shows where the valves are located?

Thanks a lot
Yoshi
