Okay, my wife called me giving me the symptoms of what the car is doing and here it is: When she goes to start the car, it takes a long time to turn over.
Once started the idle is pretty crappy and she says it sounds as if the car is going to stall.
I've recently changed the plugs, plug wires, VC gaskets, breather hose, and MAF.
What could be causing these conditions?
thanks in advance for all the help.

did this just start as soon as you changed the plugs, wires , ect?  if so , could be a crossed up plug wire.

No, i did the plugs about 7 months ago. Could it be a bad fuel filter?

I haven't had it changed since we've had the car. The car now has about 89k miles and it is giving a fault code again. Last one was for the secondary air injection system. I searched for vacuum leaks and found none so my air pump might be bad but I was told these pumps are worthless and that some people rip them out of their Audi's.

I'll have autozone read the codes again and see if this is a new one....but do you think it may be a bad fuel filter? As far as the starting issues, it has a new battery (a year old) as well.

there is no code for a fuel filter as such but it would show as fuel pressure low which would give other codes ( they are called soft error codes ) they dont put the CEL on, change the fuel filter and see if the problem persists

Okay this is truly wierd. I picked up the car from my wife's job to have the codes read and see first hand the symptons. I started it just fine and drove to Autozone with new idling issues. Once there, the guy connected his code reader and told me that it passed...everything was fine....(say what?). I still had a CEL !!!!

Anyways, so i get back in to go home and turn the key. The exact symptom my wife described was happening....wouldn't turn over. I tried again and gave it gas and it started. However, the AC was on but no air was coming out of the vents. And turn signals wouldn't work either.  So i turned off the car, waited 3 seconds, and started the car again. This time it started with no problems and i drove home with no idle issues but still with a CEL.

What is going on here???? Has anybody experienced this before???

Thanks in advance for all the help.

A bad coolant temp sensor will cause hard start and idle concerns, and almost never throws a fault code, have you changed that yet to the updated ect sensor?

No I have not, is it a PITA to change? When you say "update ect sensor" are you talking about the sensor that has a different color now than before?

Yeah it should be green instead of black, its not too hard to get at but its a tight fit on a 2.8.
Its on the back of the engine on the passenger's side, remove the intake hose and you should be able to see it with a flash light facing straight upwards, if its black replace that piece of s***.

A bad temp sensor will only cause it to crank normally but won't start, if the starter isn't cranking like it should i would be looking at the battery ground cable.

Okay, I'm picking up a green coolant temp sensor from the dealer today and will try to install it tonight. Do I need any special tools?? Does it twist out or do I just pull on it?

I'll give an update after the install to let everyone know how it went.

There is only a clip holding it in, pull the clip out and pull the sensor straight up and out.
Make sure the coolant resivior cap is ON or almost all of the coolant will come out.
When installing the new sensor get the o-ring on there right and when pushing in the locking clip try pulling up on the sensor and make sure its in there good.

well it turns out the old sensor is the blue one, not the black one. So I'll have to go to the dealer and swap my new green one for a new blue one.  Did the blue one replace the black one some years ago as well??

If it fits the electrical connector use it, as long as its not the black one your're golden.
The green one has been the replacement for a while now, but i have seen some blue ones in the parts bin showing up now so its probably the superseeded sensor, i would say if it fits try it out.

I have the same problem... along with some other faults... but last time i got the dealership to check out my car fully, they told me the control moldule was turning faulty... but their mechanics told me to not replace it until i had to cuz the unit alone is over $400... not sure if that may be the cause of your problems..just throwing that out there i guess. I'm planning to get my car checked out again sometime... so we'll see.

I checked it out, the blue top sensor will work for the 2.8L engine.
Did you already install it?

Not yet, I called my dealer parts guy and he said they have a darker green coolant sensor with the square end that apparently came after the blue sensor....so it looks like I'm golden. I'm picking it up today after work and installing tonight.

Thanks for all the help auditech79!!

does the sensor need to have the o-ring installed with it? the old one didn't have one and I can't install the clip to hold the sensor down with the o-ring attached because i can't push it further down into the pipe. if i take it off i can get the clip in.

never mind, i saw after several failed attempts that the old sensor's o-ring was still in the pipe. Was I pulled it out everything went back together like a puzzle.

AFter plugging everything back up, i started the engine and it began vibrating at idle for about 30-45 seconds. Then I drove it 3 miles, stopped, turned off engine, waited 2 min, then restarted and it started normally. Went back home and everything seems to be normal. I turned off the engine waited and turned it on again and no problems. No vibration either.

Thanks auditech79

Ha glad you got that figured out, when i first did a sensor i left the o-ring in too and i felt like an idiot when my team leader came over and pulled it out for me.
