Default 2003 A6 2.7T - Brake questions

Just had the brakes done: replaced rear rotors and pads and turned front rotors and replaced pads. A ceramic pad was used to cut down on brake dust. Total job was just under $520 if anyone is interested in comparing.

Question: Has anyone had their front rotors turned andexperienced any problems? Is there anything I should avoid other than getting them red hot and then splashing through cold water? They weren't going to turn them initially, but found a slight pulsing due to wear and went ahead and turned them to eliminate it.

PS - The dealer did the rear pads at 40k, so I'm a little surprised they wore so fast since I do mostly highway driving. The car just turned 101k last week.

I just did a brake job myself. I have a 2000 2.7. I got Zimmerman cross-drilled front rotors and Brembo rear rotors with ceramic pads in the front and rear. I got it all for $460. Dealer quoted me $975 with OEM parts. They would not turn the rotors.

That sounds reasonable. I no longer have the desire to crawl around on the floor to save $60 and I have an excellent and reasonable indie repair shop available. But I wouldn't mind a set of cross-drilled rotors on the front when/if the time comes. Thanks for the info.

To answer your question ppgoal, whenI hadmy 1999 Mazda Millenia S, when I got my front rotors turned or replaced, i always changed the front pads too ( the same with the back) because of the plusing reason and because i'm pretty sure that you know that when you change or get you rotors turned, the pads are shaped for the old rotor. im not getting smart or anything, but thats what i do. yeah it is more money that way, but i dont like problems.

I have a 2000 A6 2.7T Tip
I just did mine myself. I went with Zimmerman cross drilled rotors with a black powder coat instead of zinc. For the pads I went with Hawk HPS cause everyone said they are quiet and have great performance. HB363F.689A for front and HB364F.642 for the rear. I also went with a set of Stop tech GoodRich Stainless brake line kit part 30013. I spent 247.22 for all the pads and lines shipped. The rotors I got for 261.00 shipped. Awesome setup for around 500.00 and the stainless lines feel better than stock. I got my stuff from a company called performance peddler dot com. I found them on Ebay I asked for a better price and they emailed me a coupon code ebayrocks You have to log in under wholesale login. I hope this helps everyone. It took me a long time to research before I made a purchase. I'm very happy.

Getting rotors turned is always a poor idea. Most of the time it does more damage than it does good. My dealership refuses to turn rotors. The problem is that the machines that do the turning have slop in them, and when that combines with the spinning rotor that is already out of whack, it equates to little or no improvement, and a weaker braking system. Rotors are cheap and should be replaced, not milled.

Like reaper said, turning rotors on any car is a bad idea, on audi's its a horrible idea. Audi uses rotors made of a lot softer material than other companies so they tend to warp VERY easily after they have been turned. I bet your gonna notice your pads wear out in the front 60% faster as well as feel the pedal start kicking within 10 thousand miles.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've never known turning rotors to be an issue, as long as there was enough metal. But I have to respect auditech79's expertise.

They did replace the rear rotors, saying it was not worth turning them. They did not expect the fronts to need turning, but after replacing the front brakes there was a little pulsing (which I had noticed with the old pads also) so they turned them. I have to report that in 2000 miles of driving therehas beenno pulsing. I have been using them gently so they wear in well. I'll keep an eye (and a foot) on the situation and let you know what happens in another 8k miles.

If indeed they start pulsing and wear quickly, I'll look into replacing both rotors and pads. I'll definitely investigate the Zimmerman's because I like the idea of cross-drilled to remove water and dust under hard use,
