I'm a Horsepower TV fan and it seems that they use Royal Purple for their vehicles.  I know sometimes that a product is hyped up because they are a sponser on a show.  I've heard people on here suggest Mobile1 synthetic.  I was just wondering if Royal Purple is actually better.

As a side note, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a synthetic oil by the name of Syn-Tech (I think) and used it in my truck and used Rotella in my motorcycle and they both seemed to have worked well.  No issues what so ever.  My question is this.  Are we just paying for a name when we buy the more expensive oils?  Or is there really a difference.

Royal Purple is great stuff! Only a few bucks more than Mobil 1 but it seems to be a much better fluid, especially for a turbo.

Royal Purple isn't a true sythetic any more than Mobil 1 is.  If you want a full synthetic you have to use Redline or Amsoil.

I like watching the Powerblock as well, but the reason they push Royal Purple is because they are a primary sponsor of the show just like Matco tools.  At the end of the day, much of what you are paying for is the name and marketing.....oh and don't forget the purple color additives.

Considering the cost variance - I just don't think it is worth it.

Costner - Have you or anyone you know had any experience with Amsoil or Redline?  How much is that stuff?

I kinda figured Royal Purple was more sponsership on Powerblock than anything else.  Bob, is that what you're using?

I stick with Castrol 5 w40 FULL synthetic. From what Ive read, it is a true full synthetic and not only audi, but a whole lot of other german car companies recommend castrol. Ive always wanted to try AMS and see what they are all about. As far as royal purple goes, I tried a lot of their products in my old acura integra. I was really dissapointed with most of thier products and went right back to mobile 1 for oil.

I have never used either Amsoil or Redline because they are harder to find and I question whether they are worth the price.  In all my years and all my cars I have never had an oil related problem so I often think people read too much into this stuff.  Let's be honest - we aren't running full race engines turning 14,000rpms here, so the biggest concern for us should be the turbos - and any sythetic oil (whether it uses a class III or class IV basestock) should do just fine.

Thus - I'll probably stick with Mobil 1 unless I find anything to suggest it isn't doing the job.  It is easy to find so I can stay consistent - and my indy shop uses it in everything from vintage Jags to new Porsches....and what is good for them should be good enough for me.

Unless something has changed, and unless you are referring to the European version, Castrol isn't a "true" full sythetic.  Just like Mobil 1 they claim they are, but they both contain Class/Group III basestocks (not Group IV).  I guess there is some debate of this, but if you really want to know check out the "Bob is the oil guy" www.BITOG.com website and you can find a ton of info about this very subject.

I work at a top end Audi/Porsche Dealership and we use all Castrol in our Audi's. Porsche uses mobil 1 0W-40.

I've read everything.  So basically, running a good synthetic or syn-blend will more than likely keep me out of the shop.  I'm going to go to Wal-Mart today and price the Mobil 1 and Castrol.  Those are the leaders.  Although, I may compare the ingredients to the Syn-Tech.  That may work as well.  It worked just fine in my truck..

I've asked 4 audi dealerships from SD to Oakland about which oil to use.
They all said mobil-1.

You can get a case(6) of mobil-1 from costco for $30!!!

I went to Wal-Mart at lunch time.  The 5qt jug of Mobile 1 and Castrol "fully synthetic" goes for $20.  Super Tech (previously and incorrectly mentioned by me as Syn-Tech) goes for $14.  Considering what I'm protecting (mainly my wallet), I think it's worth the six bucks to spend for Mobile 1 and Castrol.  I haven't checked yet, but I'm going to bet it uses more than 5qts of oil

I'd use one of the name brand synthetics.  Maybe I'm a sucker for marketing, but an extra $6-8 a few times a year sounds like cheap insurance when a turbo replacement is over 3 grand.  (But I'm still using midrange gas because I haven't seen any performance difference and it adds us when you drive 1000 miles/week.)

I believe the 2.7T takes a little over 7 quarts.

PPGOAL...I agree.  Cheap insurance it is.  Also, you answered another question I've been meaning to ask.  If anyone used mid-grade fuel.  Unless you're on a track, I wouldn't think that it would matter much.  In daily driving, I wouldn't think we'd really have to worry about carbon buildup or anything and that the turbos would work just fine.  With this being my first turbo vehicle, I wasn't sure if it would foul up the plugs or if I'd develop a knock.

My uncle is a dist. for RP, and from what I have seen it is a good oil. I used to build oil testers for him and we would do demos and RP was the best performing. I haven't heard anything about it in awhile or really payed attention for that matter, but I remember alot of hype about HP gains, longer times between oil changes etc.... I know on his 1995 F250 diesel that now has 400K+ miles, he used to go on like 18,000 mile oil changes and would send off a sample to be tested and the oil was still good.

royal purple is without a doubt a superior product
ive been building race engines for years and have never seen motors look cleaner internally than with the RP

amsoil is my low cost solution as its readily available to me, seems to work better than mobil1
i have customers whos cars used a quart between changes, with the amsoil theres no need to top off at all
the mobil 1 seems to burn off at a higher rate than others which leads me to think the film strength isnt as high as the others

When looking for a synthetic oil, just make sure it meets the VW 502, 505 standards.  I use castrol syntec in my 96 avant and it states on the bottle  what auto manuf statdards they comply to.

I've seen people use Royal Purple, perticulary my friend who has a Vr4.  It works great on his car and also another one of my friends who has a sr20det 240sx uses Royal Purple, if its good enough for an sr20 motor i think it shouldnt have a problem in the Audi's motors.  That said I still use Mobil 1 in my 2.7t.  It just seems that this is the oil that is most commonly used and I never have had engine problems while on it so it has to be good.  Royal Purple is expensive and hard to find compared to Mobil 1 so I stick with Mobil 1.

i have been using royal purle for about 4 years 2 years in my civic si and 2+ in my A4 i have used just about every produts that they make for audis and the best story i rember is when i first got the car i had the tranny servied by an transmission shop which some how put the wrong fluid in my transmission and in my differanal so i would have to fight it into gears and it lost power so i was looking on royal purple web site and it doesn't really say what fluid to use in our trannys and diffs so i email them tell them my story and i get an email back from jason at royal purple to call him so i do i explain to him my problem and how i have used there products for a while and have had no issues with them, so he tells me the oil weight 75w90 and tells me that he is going to call over to napa closest to my house to have them "take care of the fluid" as long as i fill out a sheet stating when the fluid was put in who did it and if i noticed any diffance. so i headed over to napa got the fluid all for free i then got it changed by a local audi tunning shop and filled out the sheet and faxed it in. on first drive after the fluid was changed to royal purple it shiffted like a hot knife though butter and it was just like it was before the fluid mishap. and now almost 2 years later it still shifts get and runs great. i also use there oil in this A4 with no issues. sorry for it being long but this is my experances with royal purple
