I was surfing youtube last night and came across some video's of people with 4.2's that sounded mean. Deep thoated exhaust that was loud but sounded more like a cobra mustand than an audi. Some of the guys were cutting out the mufflers and going straight back to the tips. Does anyone know if this is a good idea or are there other inexspensive ways to make it sound that awesome?

An x pipe is where the pipes comes together and creates and x somewhere downsteam in the exhaust. I don't remember exactly what the benefit to this is though.

I would suspect the X-pipes either allow the pressure to balance better between the cylinder banks or allow exhaust gas to escape in case one of the pipes gets somehow plugged.

Don't be amazed if, after you rip off the mufflers, your A6  a) doesn't run as well,  b) gets worse gas mileage, and c) throws codes.  Among other things, mufflers provide backup compression for the engine.

I would not take the mufflers out.  You are going to have some issues with performance.  I would just get a set of aftermarket mufflers and if that doesn't get you the sound that you want, they can do something with the front of the system as well.  I think you can get something set up at a good exhaust shop for around $600.  You could also go with a full custom system?

i didnt say anything about it being good for your car but you will get a sick sound.

as for just replacing the mufflers, check out flowmaster's new "super 44" series mufflers. its supposed to be the "the Most Aggressive, Deepest Sounding, Most Powerful Muffler ever made". i thought it sounded pretty sweet. here:

I would ask Midas about the flowmasters, I thought they were only good for muscle cars and trucks.

Bingo.  X pipes balance the pressure pulses coming from the different cylinders.  The location of the x-pipe in the exhaust stream can affect HP and TQ.  Fairly modestly for street purposes, but more significantly for tracked cars.

I didn't like the AWE track, belt whine and burble....don't see the point in a 300HP sedan posing as a 400HP street scrapper or a 500HP track beast...but that's just me....links to my vids are posted earlier on this forum.

X-pipe does "balance" per se the exhaust coming from the cylinder banks.  One bank fires, it goes one way.  The other bank fires, it goes the other way.  Because this happens so fast, a type of vortex is somewhat created which in turn sucks the exhaust from the cylinder banks further lessening pressure in the cylinder which helps it move easier and quicker.

a) it will run better on any car with no exhaust/mufflers/etc, no restriction= easier flow=more hp, c'on man, u should know this better since u drive 2.7t; b)not that significant if you want to go faster; c)that's if you delete the cats , the CO2 sesor are right after the cat before the resonator, deleting the mufflers has nothing to do with CEL.
just my 2 cents

x-pipe improves flow and will actually increase your low-midrange trq. H-pipe will do the same but is more for higher RPM's but it'll also sound louder.

I found this out on both my Mach1 and Cobra....it works very well.

If you want mean sound AND performance get high flow cats, x-pipe (not as loud as H-pipe but louder than stock) headers, and a high flow airfilter. K&N, JLT, whatever is out there for Audi's. Make sure you find someone to tune it though because this will affect your AF ratio. You don't want to detonate one of these motors- it could cost a bit to replace. LOL

Not sure how it is with Audi's but with my Mustangs I got a 40-90 whp bump.
275 to 322 RHWP on the Mach and 380 to 475 on the Cobra.

Flowmasters are junk for AUDI's..I took out my xpipe and noticed better torque, lower oil temperature and a meaner sound with no drone or whine. It is silent when idling which is nice because of the sleeper effect but at WOT from a standstill or on the freeway sounds F***ing good. If you are doing mufflers I highly recommend Borla or Magnaflow for a discreet sound at idle and around town but when you step on it, people will hear the ponies under the hood. Same effect as the RS6/4. You want a flowmaster? Go buy a pickup or a American made muscle car. They are great for those applications....
