Default 2002 A6 repair...Am I getting ripped off?

Hello all,

First off, I am not car repair savvy AT ALL. I have a long story with this car that started with an oil change where the tech used the wrong size oil filter (which blew off while I was driving and ruined my original engine) and ended recently with over $6000 of repairs which were covered by my after market warranty (whew!).

My question is this: My check engine light came on recently and the dealership read the codes for me and said that I needed a replacement of the vacuum hose. They say that there was a problem with the hose before that someone tried to fix using a "quick fix" substance. Now I have lost the seal on the hose and am getting a check engine light, steady on. They say that it will cost me $800 to fix the problem, and I feel that is really high. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Is it safe to drive this car around?

Thanks in advance!
DL

Yeah...they said that they would have to take off the intake manifiold to get to it. I thought that sounded really expensive. [:@]

Ugh, there is only one line going under the intake manifold, the only catch is you don't have to take off the intake manifold to do it, they are ripping you off for sure.
