I've got an 03' A4 Quattro Tip 1.8T and I really dislike the 4cyl sound. I would love to just replace the muffler with something subtle but would mask the engine noise a little bit.

A local shop said that they could put a set of Magnaflows on it for $200 installed. This seems really cheap. Anybody familar with the sound of these. The exhaust shop said it would have a mellow sound to it.

They also said that they could put Borlas on it (2 of them) installed for $240! I can't even find these mufflers that would fit my car. Anything I see with a Borla name costs $700 each. I must be missing something.

Any other muffler recommendations that are not to load. At this point I'm not going after replacing the entire exhaust system ( I can't afford it now). I'm having trouble find other options that would fit this car.

Thanks for your help.

On the Borla's they are just using their universal mufflers, usually around $100 each retail. What you are seeing for around $700 or more is the cat-back systems. The Borla and the Magnaflow will have similar sound tones, mellow, low tones. They will not have too throaty of a sound. We have had good luck with Magnaflows on imports at my shop, not too lound and deffinately not buzzy.

I would say go for the Borlas for the build quality alone. I've had Magnaflows on three different vehicles except the Audi, and every pair has broken the welds at the inlet pipe on the muffler. After the muffler shop rewelded them, they worked great. I've also had Borlas on a smaller engine car, and it sounded really smooth.
